Hi MG folks,

I posted a mini-rant about this (i'm in no way upset or angry, just a little frustrated) on the Facebook MW group about module function tagging . There was a time when one could select a module function, such as "VCA", and be presented with list of modules that served that function. Now when a user selects "VCA" they get result that include modules like "Percussa Super Signal Processor " which kind of defeats the purpose of categorization.

I understand that many modules have multiple functions and there is a benefit to cross-listing. I question the usefulness when that modules extra functions do not really meet the criteria of the function filter. The example above is extreme, because it illustrates how a user looking for a VCA will be presented with something utterly ridiculous for that function. Other cases like a drum module being cross listed as an Envelope Generator, because it has an EG, but that EG is not accessible for use with other modules, begs the question of it's intended function.

I do not have a solution, I wish I did. It was mentioned on Facebook that maybe there should be a logical separation of Function and Feature. For example, MATHS is many things and should by all means be cross-listed. However, it is at it's core a Utility module. If I could select the Function of Utility then further refine my filter by Feature tags, that would solve both the need for users and people listing modules with many uses. So basically, all modules could have a single main function and then have an unlimited number of features. The Function categories could be a little more broad to encapsulate the wide range of features many modules have.

I understand that, if implemented, it would require a large amount of data normalization and refinement. I am not totally sure how to handle something like that as I have not given it any thought beyond this sentence :)

I hope this all makes sense and it's not coming off sounding like nonsense or a complaint. I care about this site and use it daily.

I think I'm going to focus on the VCO/effects side of things to start with as I can use the Deluge for sequences and beats at the start then as I get further down the line I can decide to expand.
Plenty of research to do in the meantime which is exciting!

Hello, this is my current setup, minus the Beast-Tek Rich Glitch I have which I couldn't find on ModularGrid.

I am enjoying where I'm at, after about 5 months of wriggling - however I feel a little lost as to how to make my rig more like an instrument that a single sound source generator (if that makes any sense).

Also I can't for the life of me work out what I am doing with the Erica ADSR :/ ! ..and the Recti-Combi is slightly confusing.

I'd like to be able to have my set-up be able to play as a self contained unit, for rhythmic & ambient styles, and also in conjunction with Ableton which is why I added the CV Pal.. considering getting a Beatstep pro too.

Anyway, just thought I'd throw it all out there and see if anyone had suggestions or advice for me - much appreciated!

Hello again Lexi, Sorry for being gone for so long, Lots of stuff happened recently, travelling etc. And at one point I totally forgot this website even exists haha!

I wanted to tell that since last time, Ive finally got KORG Minilogue and it has been alot of fun and just week ago I discovered software called VCV Rack, if you are not aware, it is software modular synthesizer and its completely free with 3rd parties developing new modules all the time, Ive had a blast with it and if you havent already, I suggest giving it a go too! Now that I have VCV Rack, I dont think I have to buy harware modular synth anytime soon, also because Im saving up for new guitar and microphone at the moment, But definitely someday in upcoming years I have to get some Eurorack going! (maybe if i get employed for few months, I could afford it too)

I havent really moved forward with electronics stuff, because ive been travelling around since like start of september and finally got back home 2 days ago with no further plans except just chilling at home for the rest of the year haha. Ill see after guitar and mic if I start to save up for cheapo soldering iron and some basic components to start some DIY projects with, maybe some guitar pedals for now.

its just bad luck. at least you have redress with the manufacturer. they give you warranty and thats what warranty is for. however you should try building some kit yourself, its great fun and the satisfaction you get from troubleshooting is huge. AJLindsay, you're funny.

The pads was added after the track was recorded. I felt it needed something extra. Korg Minilogue is the culprit.

seriously though, you will fill that space and want to expand.

i started in modular, last year, and you start by going through the modules listings in modular grid, reading about the different devices and watching alot of videos that are posted with them. you start to see the potential and make judgement calls based on instinct, trust your instinct. for complex beats you want triggers and for expansive soundscapes you want rich vco's and effects/signal processing. good luck and happy travels amigo

I added some "pedals" that are just images of plug/connector bodies so that I can more easily see if things will fit with actual use. It works pretty well with the system as-is, here's my initial test:

I added a straight round metal plug, a right angle round metal plug, a right angle flat metal plug, and a simple straight coupler.

I've had several thoughts about it since I tried it though:
* should some special parameter(s) or a category for "plugs' be created?
* There are MANY different sizes and shapes of plugs out there, lots of work to add them for little benefit?
* Maybe just a series of generic black or chrome rectangles that are the approximate size of plugs could be used?
* To get the images of plugs to look correct certain ones need many versions, right-angle plugs in particular! Even with the handy rotate feature it still puts the body pointing a direction that might not make sense. So to do it so all scenarios are covered a right angle plug needs a right-hand version, a left-hand version, and a top-down version for when the body is pointed down through certain pedal boards that have open slots (like PedalTrain etc). I suppose if the rotate feature had additional angles like flip/mirror and top-down etc but it probably isn't worth the programming effort since I can't see that of being any use for actual pedals?
* due to their small size these plug-pedals are hard to position because the info, rotate and trash icons often cover the entire image. I didn't have a problem dragging them by the Info icon but not being able to see exactly where I was putting the plug required many re-position "guesses" and became tedious. Not sure of the value but either a button to turn off the icons or maybe just make them 1/2 or 1/4 translucent when dragging?
* I was going to add DC power and MIDI connectors but I had already spent too much time on this! ;-)

I'm never quite sure how to measure a guitar pedal when adding or correcting one. Should I measure:
A) just the box itself?
B) or include the jacks?

Measuring between the jacks can add 5 to 10 mm or more to a dimension which would help to better gauge placement and available space but might distort the image of the pedal? Of course spacing is going to be dependent on what type of plugs are used so . . .OH! Idea! ("plug" module idea removed from this thread and I'll start a separate thread for it)

So I am really a Bass player at heart but since moving to a new area and leaving playing in bands for a while I have found myself addicted to watching various Modular/synth vids tuning into Sonicstalk etc generally wanting to try/setup my own electronic performance/ Gig type rig.
I have jumped in at the deep end with a couple of bits but could do with some advice on where to go next.
Firstly I purchased a Synthstrom Audio Deluge which I'm currently trying to learn how to use (new to sampling also) but I saw it as a good control centre for the setup or some of it.
Next I have ordered a case 84HP x2 with a Doepfer A100 power supply and have won a couple of pitsburg modules as a start point and also won a couple of modules a Pittsburg Waveforms and Mixmult.
I'm open to many styles of music but my aim is to eventually perform with it as a standalone rig and currently love big expansive soundscapes and complex beats.

Any help would be great thanks.

When I decided to get into eurorack I fantasised about quantizers. The idea that you can use CV signals not "meant" for melody to create melody really spurred me.

The melodic, plucking sound that's part of the beat was created by mixing two function generators and putting the resulting signal through a quantizer before it went on to Rings. All the melodies are combinations of a sequenced line and a random CV.

Do tell me what you think! Praise or criticism, equally appreciated.

When you edit a module and upload a new photo, will that replace the existing panel photo, or add an additional one? There are a few I think I could upload, but I didn't want to replace anything that's currently out there.

When you upload a new photo it will replace the old one, but the old one still is not lost.
For every upload a new version is added.
Other people who have set their module image to HEAD version (default) will see your newly uploaded image.
HEAD means: always show the newest image.
If they switch to an older version it will stick there, newly uploaded images will not affect their racks.

On a related note, why are there so many alternate panel photos that are exactly the same image?

When you click on those arrow buttons technically you browse through the versions.
The Panel Selector function was added to ModularGrid lately and is more a hack to make different images possible. It's a compromise.

Hate to read a negative note, but for $4k+....Shhhhhoooooooot. That'd buy a lot of standalone gear, some very cool FX plus drum machine(s). Is modular just for the wealthy? Go....

used alongside my Arturia Microbrute, its main function is providing more modulation sources for the modulators on the Brute Oszillator.

Try using it for filter modulation - instead of a smooth change with a sine wave you get steps in the filter cutoff. Or use it to switch modes, for example on MI Warps have it plugged into the algorithm cv control; I've also used it to do something similar on my Flame FC16 CV to switch effect modes.

The caveats are that it is an extremely dense board, and requires a) lots of previous experience with SMD, b) either a reflow oven or stellar soldering expertise, c) JTAG or serial/FDTI programming experience and tools, and d) the understanding that we cannot offer DIY support for anyone's DIY build. for passive multiplication i would never waste rackspace but use things like http://www.upbeat.ch/shop/media/images/org/mult-patched.jpg instead.

maybe add some vca to be able to modulate things?

attenuverters are also always nice to have.
