This is my main and only rack.
I update it and re-arrange it, as I try new modules.....once every couple of weeks.
It's mostly for self-generative, aural landscapes, dark atmospheres, and T. Riley-'esque repeating ragas.
No dedicated sequencers or drums. Melodies can be curated by a Key Step or (see below).
If it's beat-driven sounds with drums, I use an Elektron Rytm, and CV controlled by an A4 (sequencing and timing).
This keeps the modular rack smaller, and it's used for specific sculpted sounds.
The ALM S.B.G's are connected to a Strymon TimeLine delay. All the outputs go thru a Big Sky reverb via a rack mixer (Kawai MX-8SR) stereo send/return knob.
No connection to a computer. (except to record sessions)

Only part of the explanation, tho...there's a lot more going on, plus more stuff where that came from on the horizon. I just finished (as of 26 Jan 18) slapping together a new one for Magnatune (http://magnatune.com) entitled "West: Nocturnal Music in Five Movements" that oughta be out sometime (I presume) in the next month or so. No driving or operating heavy machinery while listening, I should note...
Hmmm...where'd this go? Doesn't seem to be there in recent times, and I certainly found it useful as a checklist as well as a way to 'ponder offline' when Internet access wasn't necessarily workable. The spec sheet rundown is still there, but not this other list.
Possibly not with a modular setup? There's some very nice all-in-one-box machines out there right now that might fill the bill at a better cost and with more simplicity. I know that if someone sat down a modular drum setup and a TR-909 side by side in front of me (from experience) that I'd go with the 909 unless the situation required something atypical as far as electronic percussion sounds...and even then, I'd still probably use the 909's trigger-out to fire that particular sound on the modular. Did that a bunch, in fact, and that might be a bit more indicative of what you might consider here as I was always able to come up with solid results.
As far as standalone machines these days, I'm all-in on the DrumBrute, but I should also note that Cyclone Analogic's TT606 and TT78 have my attention because of their sound and feature sets. Going backwards in time, some of the 'less-desirable' Roland boxes come to mind, like the TR-707 and its more collectable sibling, the Latinized TR-727. Even the not-so-classic TR-505 saw some use that tends toward your 'thick, bold' criteria; the Chicago band Big Black (ie: Steve Albini & co) made loads of use of this box on their tracks. You could, in theory, go backwards all the way to 'primitive' beatboxes as long as you had a tight bandpass filter to isolate a single, metric sound and pass that to a click-sync box like Bastl's Klik or Truetone's Time Bandit to lock it up with other devices. Again, that's from experience.
If you do go with a box like the ones above, then a simpler and more capable modular is a pretty easy thing to cook up. Once you get a trigger and/or clock pulse out of a few boxes and have them driving some more 'exotic' synthesized sounds, then things can get nice and complicated, musically, in short order. One you have a pulse of ANY sort, then you can use it for anything one might input a pulse into...sequencer clocks, VCAs, LPGs, filters, what have you. And to me, that's a better use of the modular architecture, to create a more open-ended sound programming environment rather than something that just does a one-trick sort of sonic vocabulary.
Maybe they're frustrated music critics? I know that I certainly qualify a lot of the unimaginative (ab)use of electronics in mainstream pop these days as an 'abortion'...

Hello, I'm a beginner, and would like to build a good start drum rack up, with thick, bold melodic sound (techno, dance, and dinner music) at a reasonable start price, are there are some suggestions where to start.
Still not sure if they are idiots or geniuses. There is at least one guy in Jakarta who thinks that modular users also are the target group for illegal abortion. He puts really a lot effort into letting us know.

A few things...
It's a bit redundant to have both the Intellijel Audio I/O and muJack in such a tight setup, since having two sets of stereo outs is perhaps a bit of a space-waster. Plus, given that the muJack is designed for direct-wiring to various Intellijel mixers, you might be able to pick up a couple of extra hp by going with a stereo output that's smaller and scrapping the I/O altogether, since the usual audio-in situation with a guitar/synth deals with a mono signal. As for the input stage as well...do you just want the audio, or do you want an envelope follower as well so that the dynamic envelopes from the inputted instrument can do things like control VCAs, filter cutoffs, etc etc etc? If the latter, the Doepfer A-119 is a pretty straighforward solution, and you also get a gate comparator that goes high when the level exceeds a set threshold.
As for effects...I've always thought that, in a modular environment, a straight-up-analog spring reverb is a 'do'. They have interesting nonlinearities (being a mechanical device) that FX algorithms just never quite nail, plus when you overdrive them with a hard attack, you get this great, dubby, metallic 'splat' that just can't be duplicated just right. Also, you might consider a pedal I/O module like Malekko's SND/RTN, as an example, for an easy way to tweeze a stompbox (or any other line-level thingummy) into the rig and add something that might not be quite so modular-able.
BTW, I'm assuming you're using a back-plane power inlet...? Don't see one on the patchpanel...

Erica Synths Black Hole DSP sounds quite good and the overall functionality is good but definitely not great, owing to the limitations of the FV-1 chip. If you're taking MIDI in it sounds like you've got a computer in your setup. Perhaps you could use Valhalla reverb in Ableton or similar...

Whats the best option if you want to install a module upside down to get the jacks in your preferred position? Are there panels available with the markings flipped or is it a DIY job to flip the panel and mark it up manually or to create a stick on overlay.

All these hundreds of Eurorack users who know me also know that I have strugggled to build my own rack, using multi layered ply and some curtain rails, which was finished in Dec the 10th this month (chats and pictures are available if one cares). So, nobody tries to scam you, your English needs adjusting a bit. I was not trying to SELL you anything, I wanted to return to you a defective, unused unit, you have sold me. You WOULD have gotten the same unit back, so if it was that easy to fix why did you have to go to such lengths instead of replying on PayPal and offering to fix it! Look below, you never replied to me in 5 days, then when I escalated to a claim via PayPal fuck knows what you have said to them, a load of bollocks by the look of it!

To be more precise the instrument has got two audio inputs that should both take an audio signal and process it further. I have tried the module thoroughly and the Right Input does not work, meaning it does not take the signal in. Also, the data pot on the left hand side is very very wobbly and scratchy, as in noisy when turning. I have been told the unit is new, tested and works correctly but I am afraid it is not the case.I cannot fix the unit myself since it would entail undoing some 7 potentiometers, 2 push buttons and approx. 10 miniature jack sockets in order to remove the front panel. Then I would need to desolder the wobbly pot (which is impossible without damaging the circuit board, due to the fact that it has been soldered to the PCB and has got thick metal legs that have a lot of solder). Further on zi would also need to desolder the Right in jack and replace it, but with the same risks and consequences as with the pot).I would like a full refund to buy this unit from a proper distributor as it looks like your DIY instruments are not made properly.

However, when I tried to patch Rings or Ogre FM, or DynSync 303VCO into Clouds, the Right input socket of the Clouds you sold me did not get any signal through. As I pulled the jack out I could hear a short noise and tried to plug it in again, no signal going through. The socket must be incorrectly wired/soldered or it is defective. Now, in order to change a socket like that one would need to undo all the pots, sockets, etc. and I am not qualified to do that, plus it looks like the other sockets may be like that or become so after very few plug ins and out, which tells me that they are of very very bad quality. But, what is annoying is that you were supposed to check the Clouds module properly before sending it to me like it is and avoid this.Also, the input gain pot is really wobbly, like us broken AND is very noisy, it makes a scratchy noise when turning it. This is not right, you either used cheap Chinese components from Tayda OR sold me a defective unit! I want my money back, this is annoying! Now, I will need my money back so I can order one built by Mutable Instruments or buy a second hand one, but original since I do not trust DIYers anymore. You must understand that this is not right nor fair for a buyer to put up with, so no hard feelings but the Clouds module is not as described, since it is not working as you implied when you asked for the money for it! Yes, you have to be careful 0f specs listed for the modules you have and what info is pulled up through the ModularGrid entries. Some of the modules have been entered by individuals and shops and there is always that demon called "typo." I generally use the figures as a guideline; but, always double check the module manufacturer's specs to make sure. These values are also steady state values and do not reflect startup loading on the power supplies. They even make adapter modules that delay the start up of modules in order to minimize the extreme loading condions on rack power up.
Power Supplies themselves along with Powered Racks are animals unto themselves and as you pointed out, many are not listed due to variety, the nature of the bus structures, and other factors. I could be wrong; but, I view ModularGrid as a planning and layout tool foremost, with the added features of calculating module loads on the busses as a secondary feature. Like most things, MG is still a growing product/tool backed by a large user community. Things progress slowly and matters are not helped much by the comings and goings of module manufacturers and limited module production runs.
So, when all else fails, I always keep a spreadsheet of everything to make sure I stay under my self-imposed 80% loading rule per rack row. I prefer to use the non-powered racks and supply my own P/S modules and PSUs ... one per rack row using the TipTop Audio uZEUS modules. This gives me an advantage of only turning power on for the rows of modules I might be using as opposed to the whole thing sitting in standby mode doing nothing. The disadvantage would be that my setup is not very portable which does not appeal to most musicians. There again though, this is one of my home hobbies and not a profession that tromps around from one venue to another.
In the end, I use MG more for module and rack layouts more than anything else and the reports as a quick calc on P/S requirements. Then my spreadsheet kicks in ... both the one tracking rack electrical loadings, and the other tracking expenditures, LOL.
SCAM ALERT FOR ALL THE SELLERS ! This guy ( DanMan ( real name Dan Leuca residing in UK, originally from Romania ) wanted to pull a classic paypal scam on me, opening a "item not as described" claim on Paypal just shy of 6 months after receiving his module.
He said he couldnt have tested his module up until now since he didnt have a case for it but at this moment and for some time now he has been selling 8 of his modules up here to the general public meaning he has had a case to run any kind of module for quite some time. Obviously when i presented all of this to the paypal they threw out his claim in matter of hours - didnt even investigate, thats how SCAMMY it was. Regarding technicals, the guy doesnt know what he is taking about, he is taking about the encoder for the clouds gain pot - wtf? He claims he "will have to find what pot it is" all tho i linked to him exactly the pot used in that place in my response (linked above) and explained to him that that pot is a board mounted pot and that those are wobbly as opposed to the panel mounted ones - panel mounted simply have a thread on their shaft with which they tighten up to the panel with a nut, board mounted dont. This confusion of notions which he presents here corresponds to his scammy intentions no doubt.

I purchased a Clouds DIY from a seller on Modular Grid in July but I had no power supply and case setup so I did not patch anything into it until at the beginning of December, after setting up my case, and this is when I found out that the right input (R) socket is not working and the left side pot is scratchy (seller told me this is also quite wobbly, because it is a different pot, an encoder??? but he assured me is working OK- this is the top left side pot). I have tried to get my money back via PayPal but to no avail. I have also contacted my bank, which can do a payback claim to PayPal but since it was over 120 days that was not possible either!
I need to find out what pot it is and buy another one but dismantling the module and desoldering these parts is a bit tricky... :((((

I'm a brand new Eurorack user as well... and.. one thing about this ModularGrid format that puzzles me the interface does not allow a planner to add or define a power supply for a rack? I know what my power supply specifications are (an Intellijel TPS30 MAX Triple Power Supply – 30W 3U / 6U busboard) .. and I spent more time than I'd like to admit trying to figure out how to add the power supply to my planned rack, (then realized finally that doing so makes no difference!) It's confusing because the power ratings listed under the rack image do not reflect what you might have ! Is there something I'm missing? In my case my "module" per se... because there is no panel - (its built into the case) but I would think the addition of defining basic Power Supply parameters would not only help inform a user about falling within PS limits but also ensure one is not limited by the number of Power Ports on the busboard or harness available.
Also, It seems like these days there a a TON of commercially available rack cases. Am I wrong? Why are there only 4 or 5 cases available?

Hello all. I'm just getting into modular and am looking for some feedback on which modules other users would recommend me getting next. I enjoy making ambient styled music with some sequences, drones and textures; classic type stuff. My current modules include a Pittsburgh Modular SV-1, a Roland 500 Series system, a Roland Torcido, a Synthesis Technology E340 Cloud Generator and a WMD Multi-Mode Filter. I'm currently using an Alturia Beatstep Pro for sequencing but also have a Squarp Pyramid which I'm working on learning. My beats come from a DSI Tempest. I'm looking at getting a Pittsburgh Modular Structure EP-360 9U case so I can "grow into it."
I'm drawn towards Maths, Erbe-Verb, Ornament & Crime, MI Clouds and Elements and 4ms stuff. Any suggestions or insights are greatly appreciated!

I see you have three sequencers - rather than rigidly distributing the same clock all over the place, why not add some variety into the mix. You could send 1 clock into MI Branches and that would send 4 different, but related, clocks out to the sequencers, leaving one spare for something else. You could do something similar with a sequential switch, that would delay the clock to four different parts in sequence.
First setup. Waiting for my case, and I'll be up and running. Any comments or advice would be appreciated. Will be getting Circadian rhythms soon. Also have Make Noise 0-coast. Thanks!

I bought an Enclave 12U case years ago and my system has been slowly filling out the case. This is where it's at now. While learning about synthesis through the slow process of building this system has been incredibly inspiring (but intimidatingly expensive) I feel that I have now amassed a collection of modules as opposed to building a complete instrument. Any thoughts on where to go from here? My aim is to have a flexible stage friendly performance instrument that can cover a set of textural, melodic, and rhythmic elements. Thank you for the insights.

This is all new to me but I’m thinking of putting together a small 84hp build to complement a mother-32. I’m hoping that it’ll be an inspiration machine as well as a fun and expressive instrument to play. I initially wanted to build something around a lifeforms SV-1 but I think it'll be more fun mixing and matching my own VCOs and such.
Love to hear any thoughts or feedback. Do the modules make sense? Am I approaching this with the right idea? Thank you very much in advance.

Hey all, finally dipping into the world of modular synths after 15 years of music!
I am trying to find the best modules to put in a rack with a Mother 32... how does this look? Is is 114 HP. I am trying to build a machine that can give me some nice random ambient but also versatile enough for space-y sequence patterns. I don't really know what modules compliment the Mother 32 well but from what I've been watching / reading online I think what I chose so far looks sufficient.
