I'm a total newb in ER so I'm here to mine your deep minds on my desired set up.
I haven't done any hardware based music in about 20 years and to be honest, if it wasn't for the compact size and power of ER I don't think I'd bother. Truth is, soft synths don't do it for me anymore so here I am!
I've already bought the top row of my rack and I'm mostly happy. I haven't quite figured out what to do with frames yet but i like the look of the parasite update so it's staying for now. I think I probably err on the side of organic sounds with looser sequencing like cinematic sound design although I'd like a flexible system for the occasional tight electronic session now and again. I want to do some work with vocals and the morphagene looks great for this. Maybe I have too much modulation and not enough utility modules. What do you think?

Batumi is on the way. For reverb/delay, I'm using external Strymon pedals or processing via my DAW. If I can get a second hand Cloud, why not..

I went into DIY because of Mutable: love them. I thought DIY would be my way of restraining my buys, teaching me something in the way. Now that I have a lot, I realize I should have payed more attention to what type of voice/system I was building. So, for exemple, there's an excess of VCAs...People say there's never enough VCAs, but right now I'm playing live with the upper row, (which only has the Ripples included VCA), and what I feel I lack is modulation.
Anyhow, how would you finish this rack? just DIY....
As others have answered, more modulation could be a good idea. I also think that your rack could benefit from some time modulation: delays and reverbs.

Maybe I'm missing something but I would like it to be easier to tag modules as "my modules".
Assuming the modules are in a rack already, look in the Edit menu for "Add all to My Modules".
Unicorn only feature, I think.
New Unicorn user here, with a couple of feature requests:
1) On the "My Modules" tab of the rack design page, the ability to show "only modules not in the current rack". Keeping track of which modules have been added or removed is tricky with a large rack.
2) A counter for each module owned e.g. I own 2 x Mutable Links. Would be nice to keep track of how many have been used in current design, in tandem with above request.
3) Export owned modules as CSV or similar, which has been requested a while back:
Would also like to see an Excel-compatible spreadsheet of the modules generated from the program.
A CSV export might be possible, I will look into this ...

But much less so than mounting them in a rack.
And you do it only once.
Maybe I'm missing something but I would like it to be easier to tag modules as "my modules". A key command would be great. If one has a lot of modules it's a pain. The only way I can see how to do it is in the results of a search. How can this be done more easily? I find being able to assemble racks from modules that I currently own to be one of the great features of MG....
Also - I haven't used the Marketplace but I speculate that, at this point, Reverb.com integration would be a no-brainer.

Total noob here ... and putting together a 104 HP Appendix skiff to compliment my Mother-32 set-up.
I am on the fence about the choice of VCAs mentioned above. I have Veils in my mockup case, but I'm wondering if the 'attenuverters' in the Blinds module will be more useful for shaping CV? Seems so on the surface, but maybe there are advanced modular heads that have an opinion as well?
I'm a guitar player by experience, and my style of modular mayhem is more Ambient/Melodic instead of Robotic/Chaotic if that helps. Thanks in advance ... what an amazing website and community you have here. Cheers.
So, here's the updated version.
I made a lot of room by switching to the Delptronics sequencer and drum voices. Filled up that space with a Pressure Points and a Shifty... though the Shifty might be under-used with only 2 synth voices.
Swapped the Atlantis for a Quadnic and SEM and Maths. The Quadnic might end up being great with the Shifty, but I admittedly don't have my head totally wrapped around what the Quadnic can do, just that it's a really cool waveform osc that has a ton of depth.
An alternate that I'm also curious about is replacing the Quadnic and SEM with a Doepfer A-111-4 (4 VCO) and maybe a Wasp filter.

Love the idea of the three Schippmann in one rig - wow. I'm wondering what you have planned for the the bottom row. As I move towards 2419hp of rig populated with 188 modules I'm not so much interested in making music as discovering sound emerging out of randomness. The idea that I could go years patching stuff and not feel like I've duplicated my previous efforts is like the linear trip into reading a wide variety of subjects where you never have to read the same author twice but you keep learning about the infinity of human thought.

One of the Schippmanns is for sale, but I am really having fun with the three of them at the moment, so I may keep all three. I like the metaphor of the variety of reading, as that is pretty much where I am also.
Utility modules are key. Good thinking.
Try to limit your initial modules to 8hp to maximize number of modules. Look into Doepfer stuff as well. Always great.
My vision of ideal setup is something hybrid with analog+digital+sampler sound sources as a base, with suffisant modulations to let my soundscapes evolve slowly over time and many filters and effects to sculpt the sound and mangle incomming sources.
And since I am not really experienced, I can not fully define a fixed setup.

As for sampling, you basically have a choice of playing back with CV control pre-recorded audio (Radio Music), do live sampling/mangling (Reflex), or use audio for buffer manipulation (Phonogene) or grain synthesis (Sampleslicer, GrandPa). These are just a few that come to mind. They can all be used in more than one way, each having a different focus.
Whatever your sound modules, only flexible CV tools will make them shine. A multiple/quad envelope/LFO (look under Modules for function Generator) module will allow for that, plus attenuation,polarizing, offset, mixing to go with it. Your mh01 will do for a while. You will possibly want a quantizer.

Yes I'm quite satisfied for now but eventually I would like to add the Morphagene & RF Nomad modules for a richer sound palette on the experimental side.
Considering your recommendations, I could replace the A140 and uLfo by Math & Batumi, add a Wogglebug for random/sh and maybe change the mh01 by a Manhattan MVP which brings me multiples.
Does this make sense?
For a noisy sytem, the stuff from Noise Engineering is a good choice, imho.
I really wish the patchbay was at the top of this module. This, unfortunately, considering the value the display appears to have, may be enough to be a dealbreaker for me. :(

+1 i just came here to use the "sort by power" feature and was disappointed to find it wasn't there. would be useful for someone making a diy power supply to see what modules wouldn't function on a low current rated supply, for example. please and thanks!
The Trigger Man looks pretty cool. I had never heard of it. The Delptronic drum modules look pretty great, too. Main reason I am looking at the Trigger Riot is easy polyrythmic sequences, both for triggering drums and for modulation. Looks like the Trigger Man can do a lot of the same thing.
Atlantis... basically because I'm lazy and it's a complete voice.
An alternative setup I was looking at before was the ALM Sid Guts Deluxe. I have a Sid Station that I really love, but hate the menu-diving. That would free up some room for a Function/Maths. And all of that would free up room for a Pressure Points (and some other utility modules), which is something I was wanting to add down the line.

Befaco BF 22. Super aggressive dual filter with small footprint. Kit is around 150 €.
I like filters, I think of buying a couple of them soon. What are the most resonant, dirty & weird filters would you suggest?
Budget is around $250 per module. DIY is ok! Already planned a Wasp, maybe multimode for the second?
Imho Mutable stuff is sounding way too clean. For a noisy setup I'll go with Harvestman, Trogotronic, Metasonix and all cheap and dirty DIY stuff or Doepfer, Wogglebug maybe. Ok not so "low cost" at the end.
Ok guys, this is my first "low cost" setup. I wanto to build a strange noisy system, and I'm searching for absurd ad unusual modules. But I think that many fundamental modules are now missing. So, what can I add now?

Travis was one of the 36 people who perished in the Ghost Ship fire last December. I made music with Travis for 10 years, we played in bands together, we recorded, and I watched him evolve from the most talented vocalist I'd ever worked with into also being one of the most inspiring synthesists. He was my best friend and his loss is felt every day.
This is the final patch that he made with his modular. I've kept it as-is for now, eventually I will start making my own patches, he was always trying to show me how and now I will learn myself.
