Old notes for independent design

Love the idea, main thing I might change is trying to use Cold Mac to swap with the O'Tool+ or Samara to swap with the LoFi Junkie and rearrange a little for more CV manipulation. Between Peaks and Teletype I think I can get by on modulation.
Especially if I pair with Doze in the Branches or Bloom in the Depths.

I do wish I could get Earthsea in here though. And the Mangroves, Sisters, Cold Mac travel case is immensely tempting.
But realistically, dual STOs, Lxd, and a Cold Mac is probably the way to go. Pam's new workout is same size but meadowphysics is already our clock and I feel like there'd be some awkwardness there.

It's also sort of tempting to get the ER-301 in the "Techno" case/Bloom in the Depths by swapping out E350 + Braids but not convinced there are sufficient modulation sources if we do that and there's no need for Braids/E350 in Doze in the Branches.

This is where I'm at right now as far as planning my rack. I already have the SV-1 and Elements and am getting the clouds next week, and then the 4ms quad lfo and then the veils after. I have 10hp free and I'm wondering what I might be missing? I've been told you can never have enough VCAs and modulation sources but I figure this system is small enough for the VCAs I already have so what could I do for modulation? OR what other utilities would I find useful using in conjunction with the other modules. I'm decently set on what I have planned so far but am also open to other suggestions.

I'm looking to do a mix of natural sounding / vintage synth sounds like Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith and Animal Collective and I love granular synthesis hence the clouds. I also want to use the system to process external audio so anything that can help with that is a plus. Hope that can give you an idea for what I might be looking for.

Any suggestions are very appreciated! :)

My initial idea was to buy a beatstep pro to sequence one or two sources and play the beatstep or the minibrute over that. But I'm not sure if that would be enough to run the system as is. It's quite a lot to get my head around at first.
Thanks for the tip on the filter, I'll ask at the store if it's possible to try some of them on the Troika!

Hi there,

I'm quite new to the synth world. I always wanted to have one, and last year I came across the affordable and seriously awesome
Minibrute. Bought it and I've been playing with it for a while now. I figured out I like playing what is called Berlin School music and love to go on adventures with it, finding it's little nuggets and sweet spots of witch I'm sure I haven't found all of them.
But I also noticed that just the one synth has it's shortcomings (there we go!). So I went back to the musicstore to listen to some other gear, but in the pricerange I was looking for nothing really did it for me, until I heard a few VCO's for modular. When I heard the Instruo Troika I completely fell for it's warmth. I asked a few noob questions and the guy from MidiAmsterdam sent me home with a list of gear which is detailed in the rack below, with some changes I made to it by venturing on the web.
This quest set me off into watching many video's about modules and there capabilities. Sometimes dizzying, but most of the time very much fun. So now you can understand I need to get my hands on a modular.
My question to you, baring in mind I'm an absolute noob, is what do you think of what I put together and is there something missing to get me started?
I do, very much like the Troika and the Clouds modules. The filter, though i never heard it in real life, is also one of the most interesting to me.

Could do Drezno or Arpitecht instead of MA-35

i would 1) start with an bigger rack than you think you'll need because experience will lead to expansion ;)
and 2) add more vca's ;P

its in general a good idea to start as small as possible modulewise and let then the rack guide your way to the next modules one at a time.

Rack Lock

There is a new button Rack Lock besides the Popover and Space Guides button.
If that button is activated it just locks your rack from further edits. That is useful for mobile devices where you could easily break your layouts when swiping over your rack.
The state of the lock is globally saved in the database for all of your racks.

I started with a MicroBrute, and now have one M32 and another on the way, supplemented by some modules for utilities and more timbres. My goal is to have a nice hardware mono synth based around the Moog sound and filter. I've owned other modules but am downsizing - although I've tried various filters and oscillators, I always came back to the M32 filter because it sounds absolutely fantastic, as do the oscillators!

If you put a bit of time in to learn the sequencer, it's not too slow either, and is very powerful for the price of the M32! If I really want to jot down a sequence asap, I use the insanely easy MicroBrute sequencer.

If you still use Ableton, I recommend looking at a MicroBrute as a controller - you get a small keyboard, pitch and mod wheels, an LFO that syncs to Ableton's tempo (not many LFOs actually sync in eurorack), and of course the extra envelope, waveforms with various timbre shaping, and the nice little sequencer. It's cheap as heck too, I got one for under £150 on eBay.

If you want to get individual modules, buy them secondhand, look after them, and if you don't like them, sell them on modulargrid or muffwiggler for the same price, so that you break even or lose only a tiny bit of money. It's worth the journey and you will never end up with what you thought you needed.

How about a section in the search criteria for expansion boards for modules?
I guess that parameter could be tacked on to the description pop-up in the rack. It'd be useful to be able to search for this because of the nature of expansions being a plus (or minus) toward the decision to include a module in your rack.

You mean to signify whether a module has an internal* expansion on it or not? You can always add that as part of the available info on the module itself and then link to the original site with more info on the expansion.

I'm not sure I'm following. By the way, there aren't a lot of modules with internal* expansions - yours and a handful of others are the entirety in Eurorack.

*I'm unsure if you mean expansions like the MIDI option on your VCO or expanders/break-out modules like the others available on MG. The latter are always posted as separate modules and tagged as such.

Just go to www.addacsystem.com there is a way to buy their modules from them directly both in EU or US.

Those with a keen eye will notice I've stolen a lot of influences from Severance here, I wanted to build a system around the Benjolin Module, so half of the modules are what I've managed to spot from youtube videos and the rest I'm making up as I go along. Usually by the time I post these racks I like to have all the gaps filled but I've left myself around 30hp here to add/swap out as necessary given any feedback received as to where I've gone horribly wrong, I seem to have developed a keenness for the MMG in my builds. Thanks for the input, I'm years away from ever getting as far as a build like this, which is why I'm putting in the hours now researching and learning as much as possible. By the time I get to looking at even a 2 x 104 I hope I should know what I'm doing.

You'd be surprised, honestly.
If you want to just set a drum rhythm going and that's it you won't need many, but as soon as you want to modulate the drums - change an 808 drive amount over time or whatever - the VCA usage starts stacking up!

I put andore, germanium and three veils, how many more VCAs does one man need :D

After glancing at it, you most likely need more VCAs and mixers - it's difficult to get too many, especially with the amount of mod sources you have!

So the knob would still be an offset that is not quantized, but all quantized notes would still be semitones with respect to each other. That's well worth considering as the offset can be full range, or just 1V (another option limits the knob's deviation) so would be easy to handle.
I had thought of a different action for the knob when there is no CV input patched in. The knob (while quantizing option is on) becomes quantized to be useful (like a glissando) but now not so sure ;)

Hey, good to hear you are moving along with this, I haven't got any racks yet, but if you were looking down that route, I would think a couple of twin racks with a mix of VCO and Filters in each, that way each can be used as a stand alone for smaller scenarios, but doubled up for the full orchestra so to speak. The answer I think will always be get more space, down the line more modules will appear as money allows, build one 2 x 104 to start, then build another and stack stack stack.

hey guys, thank you very much for the suggestions. i got my hands on a mutable instruments veils. it will take place as mixer for the voices. the ornament and crime will work as my ADSR module. and i came to the conclusion to just change my workflow (if using without octatrack) to not ''switch'' the voices on and off.
Now im just wondering if i could make room for an Intellijel shapeshifter or should i make an extra case..... :-/

has anyone of you a case just with VCOs and a separate case for filters / effects? would that be a logical (playable) approach?

Would something like the WMD Triple Bipolar VCA help? https://www.modulargrid.net/e/wmd-triple-bipolar-vca There are no kill switches, but you could CV the VCA to a Maths (or another utility) to control with the rise and fall.

Is this the current incarnation? I noticed three examples under this name. I'm a noobie so can't give technical answers, but you mentioned a mixer with switches. The Synthrotek MST 4-Channel Audio / CV Mixer has an On/Off switch for each channel. it's only 8hp so still leaves 11hp for a Quad VCA or other toys. Good luck with the build. Keep Patching.

Sounds like a cool module that is right up my alley. Could you simply revise the first option and go with the third, while incorporating the off-set knob from the second option? That is, when turned on, quantizing all notes, but with an off-set knob to deviate after full quantization has taken place? It seems like it would have better applications for live performance this way. Either way, I would love to see some video of the module.

I am presently developing the RIT M Rhythm Sequencer module ( by SDS Digital here on MG) and have reached an impasse and need some suggestions to help decide which way to go.
The RIT M is in part also a CV recorder that takes a CV + a CV offset knob and outputs it during record or playback. There is a beat quantizer option that can be turned on/off, but also I'm considering a 1V/Octave quantizer option for the CV.
There's three ways to do this, having the offset knob quantized so it steps in semitones, or having the the CV quantized and using the CV offset knob to move between semitones, and lastly quantize everything so only 1V/octave emerges when this option is turned on.
It's a real can of worms which is why I'm pivotal on it. Any thoughts anyone?
