So 0chd does exist, just out of stock at Perfect Circuit. I wonder if I could replace Otterley with this? That frees up 4hp for even more LFO (unless I do the crazy expander for even more more LFO!). The greedy part of me looks at this rack and says: "Hmmm....well I did really want the Instruo Arbhar" ....but its 18 HP so realistically that ain't going to happen. So it's probably one of:

  • Otterley + Kinks + some 2hp module (maybe dual vca...maybe logic)
  • Otterley + Makenoise Channel Saver
  • (my current inclination) 0chd + Channel Saver + Kinks
  • (0chd + expander) + Kinks + 2hp module
  • (0chd + expander) + Channel Saver.

The burden and power of choice! Luckily I'm in no hurry to buy this yet.

Opinions welcome!

I have the Ochd and the expander. I enjoy them quite a bit. The variety is good, and it can often act as a sort of ambient "sequencer" using the expander's triggers and the slow-stepped noise generators. The lack of knobs isn't as much of a problem as it seems. It's also a nice way to bind lots of things that aren't necessarily related and make them move together. It is also great for feedbacking into itself and making the modulation more unstable and unique. Otterly looks good too, but all these sound sources are going to be very thirsty for modulation, so getting more will be good.

Sounds like things are coming together well.

Indeed! It looks like the 0chd is not available at this time but I mailed Instruo so fingers crossed!

Hi Zachsname!

Firstly, regarding the dual xfade ringmod....I actually bought this because it was on clearance at Erica Synth's site. So hard to find? It wasn't for me. A bit big? Perhaps, but now its definitely going in for better or worse :). But really, you're right, it is a bit big for what it is, but hopefully it'll be worth it.

For sequencing, this will mostly be the KSP and the SQ-1 secondarily (I also got a Rene). It makes me a little sad that there won't really be any on board melody source or sequencer....but at the end of the day, it was a sacrifice that I think has to be for the sake of HP.

I do have a fair amount of external mixer: I have three sputnik 6 channel mixers (see ModularGrid Rack ) and a small 6 channel post-eurorack standalone mixer. So yes, I got the eurorack mixer bug...one of the sputnik mixers was in the first 5 modules I bought (for better or worse). I also often use veils/cloaks as a 4 channel mixer (or 2x2 channel mixer) before offloading to a "closer to main" mixer. (And yes, I do have all of the top row modules. Old rack broke...using this as an excuse to get more HP. Why not get a large rack for everything and have even more HP? Well, I don't own a home yet so I'm trying to moderate myself until that happens...)

I do want lots LFO + envelopes and CV manipulators. You mentioned 0chd...I just found out about this module (I know, where have I been?). Does this exist yet? While I love the idea of the Otterley, this could be even better...in less HP! Do you have it yet? How do you like it? How about the expander...is it worth it? I'd love to know your thoughts...

I'll probably keep the QPAS. It is a unique filter and its stereo, though ... 18 HP :( (I would love another Maths too but 20hp! Sheesh!). So What's really up for grabs is probably Kinks + the 2HP VCA (=6HP) and then maybe Otterley vs the 0chd if that can be gotten. Oh, and I want a drum...so probably the crater as its not huge and sounds great. I have the BIA in another rack, so I wanted to try something different.

Thanks a bunch for the input!

I'm also consider Makenoise channel saver instead of kinks + 2hp dual vca. I always wanted kinks, so this would make me miss it, but am trying to figure out what will make a better rack.

Alright. My initial rack broke (the board fried ... NiftyCase in case you're curious) so I just "had" to get a new rack. So I doubled my HP. The 84 HP on the bottom are, at time of writing, modules I don't have (yet). I really want the Collide 4 so the rest should center around that. I do have other racks (and a KSP, etc) so racks aren't in isolation here but...I do feel a rack should be a musical instrument by itself.

What do you think about my proposed bottom row? The top row I already have.

  • The QPAS is more HP thank I'd like...but I'm pretty sure its the filter I want
  • I found it hard to add enough clock + rhythm to the rack. I'm basically using CLK and the 4ms RCD. Not great, but HP is in demand! I thought about getting Euclidean circles, but its too big and I still need a clock :( If I could just free up 2 more HP... https://busycircuits.com/pages/alm034
  • Never enough LFOs! I do have the Vampire LFO and thought expert sleepers Otterley and Stages/Steps could be as best as I can do for the space I have
  • And I need a drum. Crater was the one I wanted the last time I filled up a rack.

Thread: Collide 4

This is kinda a very light version of

(Light, but not cheap!)

It really needs at least a sequencer to do much of nothing...but luckily I have a few of those (KSP, SQ-1...)

Thread: Collide 4

If I can find a power connector for my tiny Pittsburgh Modular Cell 48...I can do this :) I really want the Collide 4. Thoughts? Is this silly? It will talk to my other racks...not really meant to be standalone, I'm just not going to buy a new case right now.

Thanks in any case. You helped me figure out where I wanted to go with this rack!

Note that this rack is archived ; I no longer have the rack and the componenets have moved to SoundDesigner

Thread: Spectre

Wow, what a thoughtful reply! I was just making notes to self for future idea.

I got this case as I wanted the spectraphon and did not have any room for this giant in my two cases. Once I have a house, I'll allow myself to buy a large eurorack case and have my "studio" somehwere other than the hall. I decided I really wanted the Subcon Model 52 Vampire . Having recently got a Keystep Pro I realized....that's four voices of polyphony, this could be a tiny mini-system! It was never originally intended that way; it was more just a overflow case that sits near the rest of my eurorack and semi-modular. I already have the Orion phaser too as I couldn't resist a small eurorack phaser and my pedal phaser broke :(

So then I need a quick + dirty way of converting gates to something with a little more shape that can also mix down to stereo.

I've added rearranged this how I hopefully can fill this out after next year's tax season. What do you think? I'm really hoping cloaks + veils + the keystep gates can be "close enough" to an envelope for the vampire + spectraphon voices. In any case, I think it will be fun to play with and will mostly just stay at home wired to my other racks which have a bit more utility modules in them (though one can never have enough maths...sheesh!)

...this is also why I don't buy a bigger case right now....if I get it, I'll just dream of all those modules I don't have that I always meant to get!

I'd almost definitely want a quad cascading vca... veils or a clone is a good choice...

and probably a delay and a reverb...

don't think I'd want the nifty bundle pedals though... they don't have good reputations & are hard to resell...

tbh with the spectraphon - I'd want a bigger case... not enough room for support modules in a nifty case...

take a look at my signature - think it over for a while... then think about the modules you want and need to support it and then pick a case to house them, preferably leaving some space to expand (20% or so at least)

...Maybe I want the Nautilus delay with MI Veils or equivalent.

Hi Garfield,

The Rene is "okay"...its just for the money and space, I was hoping it'd be more performant. Well, I got it, and it does the job, so maybe I can learn it better. I'm sure there's more potential than I tapped.

You'll have to let me know if your sequencers work out. Someday, I'm thinking of getting a standalone sequencer. I mostly use the OP-1's....which is pretty good. I was lucky enough to get it when it was "only" $1000. I think of it more as a toy studio than a toy sythensizer.

The Morphagene is great! If you want voltage-controlled tape (that doesn't sound like tape, but also doesn't have its limitations), go for it. My newest "trick" is recording voices, decreasing the grain size to small, and then morphing through the real with CV. Can get that horror-movie sorta sound.

The E370...also great! Yes, its a lot of money, and its huge, my if you want quad morphing wavetable oscillators (and I did!), it's worth it. It is a bit more setup (loading and selecting wavetables, usually hearing them on the computer first) than most of the rest of my modules (I mostly want immediacy), but I knew that going into it. Even just the wavetable playback by itself can make for some great oscillators....then you add morphing and yum!

The octasource is great. I'm glad you enjoy yours. I actually very often pair it with the E370 to have morphing with different LFO phase offsets, but its a great LFO for just about everything. I wish it had a clock out, but I guess having a clock in I can't complain too much.

Kind regards, Garfield. I just finished planning my rack (still several modules to buy); not enough VCA or LFOs, as usual, but...sigh, ya can't have everything. If I ever get to the point of having more time to actually make music, I may consider a bigger rack in a devoted music room.....but that day won't be soon!

Hi GarfieldModular,

Thanks for the correspondence and ideas. To give you some context, this is my secondary rack. While my "big boy" rack isn't much bigger ( ModularGrid Rack ), between the two of them and several standalone synthesizers (one of the reasons I'm a bit light on oscillators and filters), including the Minibrute2 it is connected with....I can't complain about my hobbyist level. For the sake of space in my house and pocket book, filling out my eurorack and getting Glo the polyphonic whale, I mostly just want a rack that can do some intereesting sounds and rhythms.

Oscillators? Yes, I have two of them! The sinc iter is a tiny oscillator with lots of character (IMHO). I was originally going to get at least 4 of them and a midi->CV converter for some real polyphony. The MakeNoise telharmonic is quite nice as well (and if you haven't heard it, and like additive synth...check it out). Sure, I'd love more....so many delicious + lush sounding oscillators on the market today.

Ah, the Rene. I bought it thinking it would be the sequencer that would change my life. It....didn't. It's fine for what it is, but overall I wish I had gone for, say, a voltage block or something. If anyone wants to trade, I'd be down. Its actually one of the few modules I've bought that I kinda regret :/ I have a tiny rack it used to sit alone in, but honestly, I'd rather have other modules. I'm too cheap to just give it away at this point.

Overall, my main point of this rack is to design interesting (mostly monophonic) sounds and rhythms. So, yes, EGs, filters, and VCAs for the win. It is sitting on a desk with the minibrute2 (I love semimodular!), an OP-1 and the (admittedly seldomly used folktek mescaline) as (let's call it) station 2. My other rack is surrounding by...lots more keyboards and some pedals and what not in station 1. In some mythical world that I have space someday those stations will combine. I'd like to be able to do some decent drums....so the BI alter, yes, and something to make some creative rhythms....though I can always drive that from, say, the OP-1 sequencer (Kenton MIDI box not shown).

Hmmm...30 HP left. What I would like:
* more envelopes, function generators, LFOs, what have you
* obvie some VCAs . It would be nice to find exciting ones...
* an arpegiator
* a filter/dual filter.

I only have one Maths...maybe soon two. While I don't have the money to shell out for a whole rack of Maths, man would I want to play with such a thing. Could probably have 2-4 at audio rates (I suppose 2 if you don't have a mixer), and the rest LFOs and LFOs modulating other LFOs. I dunno...give me the rack and I'll give you some patches

Fuck yeah
