I personally love the thing, but I can see how it's not everyone's cup of tea as Karplus Strong synthesis does rather stand out.

That being said, it being MN ensures that there is a TON of modulation options available ehich makes it incrediably organic. I like the switch from beautiful pluck (kind of it's "default" sound) to harsh digital noise with everything inbetween. Dual 1v/O & excite inputs can produce some amazingly complex sounds and crazy duophony.

I'm sure the sale of MN's tELHARMONIC has spurred a few to sell, however, it's probably a great time to get one as you'll probably end up picking one up for £150 with some gently bartering.

BUT you'll need a sweet analogue VCO (or 2) to support this module, it's a tad too unique to be a stand alone single VCO which may have truened some ppl off. I've also heard some complain about the tracking, however, it's odd behaviour is the reason I want to keep it - it does stand out in the crowd!

Hi guys, I've seen a lot of these modules on the marketplace and I'm starting to think there is a reason why lots of people are getting rid of it, but it seem to me like an interesting module.

Im planning to start building one to hook up with my DSI Pro2 (sequencer).
I play electronic/ dance music. I want a trully analog with an added twist.

I would check out the Intellijel shapeshifter if you're looking for unique sound efx as well as melodic material. It's incredibly deep for the price, and constantly surprises me with what it can do. +1 for the mutable stuff as well. Especially clouds.

I write mostly Film/TV music and am looking to get a eurorack setup that I can use for discovering some different drone/texture sounds, interesting transitional material (swish, hit, swipe, etc.), and pulses to be mixed with some soft synths and other analog gear.

Leaning toward a mostly MakeNoise system 0 to get started (but in an 84hp case with a +12/-12/5v rail for each row), then wanted to bring in Mutable, and maybe some more esoteric modules--really like the Thonk contact mic one.

Was also considering a mostly Studio Electronics Modstar system that I would augment in a similar way (MATHS, Woggle, Clouds, Tides, etc.)

I purchased one... not really understanding what I was getting into. I thought it was just a standard dual filter. . . NOPE

It does so much, WMD really know how to create devices that are more than they appear. The uHC is a sweet filter when the input gains are low. turn those gains up for wild sounds, unstable resonance, it was build for feedback, dont hesitate to self patch this module. If you want something that isnt traditional, it one of the best choices that you can make.

I'm currently in the process of making my first DIY (modules) Eurorack 84HP 3U (brand TBD) case. It will feature 909 clone drum machine using Hexinverter NeinOhNein modules. Everything will be controlled controlled with Beat Step Pro using its drum CV outs. There are currently few modules missing from Modulargrid and I will add them once built. Mising modules are: NeinohNein Kick & NeinohNein Snare.

This is my first eurorack. Started the summer of 2015 and quickly grew. Even though this rack quickly grew I am pretty dedicated to not exceed the HP's of the case until I have something that can be fully used/played. My goal is to have a modular synth that can be played via MIDI/Octatrack or DAW, but also as a standalone creative oasis in the desert of menu diving software. ;)

2016-05-02: just ordered some new Bastl stuff: CV Trinity Expander + Mults. My first DIY's. Waiting for Tiptop to release their new quantizer....

It wouldn't be difficult to make a 2hp clock module, but I'm guessing OP isn't into DIY

Beatstep pro has a clock output :D just sayin. He should get a clock module though if the a-149 needs one though. There are some 4hp ones, I couldn't find any for 2hp

He would need to clock the a-149, control two channels of optomix, 2 channels of vca and several dpo destinations, let alone modulate the modulation with self patching.

Actually you're right - I didn't realise the A-149 required external clock.

That said the new suggestion looks great too. If you want to clock the A-149 without using a Maths you could add a dedicated clock module (if there was one that would fit into that 2hp (?) bit on the top right it'd be great, but I don't think that exists.)
Maybe the Ginko Synthese Tap LFO which has a clock out as well as a pretty complex LFO?
The Echophon would mean you can process external input with the modular, which would give more utility for sure.

Either way trust Exper's advice over mine. I only have about 16hp of Eurorack so far and I'm basically a passionate noob in the world of physical modular synthesis. I go by nothing but experience in SunVox and computer synthesis.

I'd think a bit about the Quadra + Expander + Maths all in the same rack, as Quadra + Expander will duplicate a lot of Maths functionality. They'll match really well together, I think, but unless you're looking to do complex west coast generative patches you don't really need 6 LFOs / EGs to control a DPO. Of course you could get both and sell whichever one if you don't need it though, which is the best way if you can afford it.

I wanted to get two of these but I spent all my money on other modules and don't have any space left in my case.

I've been having the same sort of issues... Readout almost always says "0" on mine as well... Some sort of power filtering issue or something?

Can I get some help me with this unit? I've been experiencing some pretty wild fluctuations with mine. It seems like there's some kind of external modulation being applied but it's hard to figure out what that may be.

I think make noise makes something like that, but to be honest I just use 1/8 to 1/4 cable adapters right into my mixer xD

I think the make noise thing is called the Rosie. Not sure, but it might be along the lines of what you're looking for.

The Karl Marx Stadt has been a great start for my Eurorack adventure. I initially planned to build, and have been building most of my modules myself using a mix of kits, schematics, and my own inventiveness; this affordable all-in-one setup is a superb basis for my mostly DIY rack. On its own, the Doepfer DIY synth is probably pretty good, with XAOC's KMS interface, it blossoms:

Like many people, I ordered some modules before really understanding what I would be needing or how it all works. I am lucky that this was the first module I received because I was able to start learning the flow of things from day 1. As I built other modules to add to my rack, I kept finding useful features, like the VCA is actually a 3 channel mixer into dual input VCA! This is obviously useful when a second VCF and VCO came online. The fact that the onboard filter takes 2 audio inputs as well as 2 control voltages means that there is plenty of room to grow and learn with this unit over time and with new modules. The build quality is good, it feels solid and works consistently; I am the second owner, and there are absolutely no issues.

Hopefully, this review helps someone else new understand what is available in this module. Couple the Karl Marx Stadt with a simple CV sequencer(with its own clock) and you have a fully functioning synth now and the basis for expanding with any module you want, since the basics are covered.

Can you recommend some In/out Interface?

A really nice thing to use is the Beatstep Pro. Worth checking it out as a possible option. It can run 2 sequences and also a drum sequence at once :D

gonna check whats the best converter for the money, the basic tools is what's scares me the most :) don't know if i'm missing something important.

I live in Portugal and i could get a basic system for 1800€ with Case on Thomann. But i've tried one and feel exactly what you've said,it sounds cool but not so special.I think it's better if i build my one even if it's way more difficult and expensive...

With an octotrack, you'll need a midi to cv converter. There's some cheap single channel options, nice complex ones with their own sequencing like Mutable Instruments Yarns. You could also get an Arturua Beatstep Pro which which convert midi but also sequence modular gear on its own. For less $ that modular midi-cv converters.

Doepfer? They have some good stuff, but the Basic System is mostly good if you want to do very basic, subtractive synthesis patching. And depending on where you live, not exactly the best deal. In Europe, Doepfer is much cheaper, but in the U.S. isn't that 'competitive'. Much of it is super simple and requires many more modules to cover what some more modern designs (like intellijel and make noise) can accomplish. ie, to cover complex osc territory like a dpo, you're going to need 2x a-111, and pair of vcas, a wavefolder, etc. Much more expensive and more HPs. I started with a lot of Doepfer, but sold it once I knew what I wanted.

I would like to use my elektron octatrack as a sequencer and maybe some MIDI/USB Keyboard, which tools do i need?
By the way, what's your thoughts on Doepfer A-100 Basic Systems?

Well, it's really best to start with a small amount like that, because once you get the basics down, you'll see exactly what you personally need. It's really different for everyone.

How do you plant to control this? MIDI? Sequencer? Etc.

Definitely. You could do a lot with that. Keep in mind though, the black limited make noise panels are only for the complete black shared system. You can't (yet) buy a black DPO separately.

I'm about to purchase a spring reverb and a filter, since I have 10hp free I have to find the perfect combination.
I was thinking about buy the Springray I would need a 4hp filter and I found the Zlob state variable filter (https://www.modulargrid.net/e/zlob-zlob-modular-t-h-state-variable-voltage-controlled-filter) which seems good! 2 inputs, HP, BP and LP...
My question is, Anyone have any experience with that? Does it sounds good?
