I was too was aiming to get Tiptop's Forbidden Planet filter but then I spotted the Omsonic limited run of their (FLF) Funky Ladder Filter which is like the Steiner Parker filter but with extra control, its a very nice sounding filter and very usable. You can mult your signal and feed all inputs then tweak the levels for each HP/BP/LP, you could do this with a simple attenuator and the Forbidden Planet filter too.
https://omsonic.co.uk/product/omsonic-funky-ladder-filter-le-8hp-edition-fire-sale/

The other thing which I think should be a personal toolbox item is the Rebach VCF-AB, its very affordable and if you like the occasional dirty 303-style acid line then this ticks the box cos it will squeal like a distorted 303 because of its internal feedback path.
https://rebach.eu/catch-series/

I'm very tempted by a Stereo Ripples filter and a Patching Panda Moonphase.

Kinda tempted by the ADDAC604 as its double the same filter that they made for their ADDAC105 4-Voice Cluster, which I found more useful than the 4-voice cluster with the ability to feed it external signals, it was simple and workhorse-like, kind of set-and-forget or just throw a little modulation at it for a background element. So with the ADDAC604 being able to be used as a Dual Mono or Stereo filter its quite a good price to keep the Stereo path from other modules, it won't be too crazy but it will be very usable.

I nearly posted something the other week about being confused about Modular mixers, there really isn't one that is suitable to fit all tastes.

Things like:
Lacks enough standard Stereo channels.
The add-on mixers lack Mutes and Pan control.
Takes up too much HP.
Its massively cheaper on Ebay, buy a Mackie, Behringer or Yamaha outboard mixer second hand or even new they can be a good price.

I've pretty much decided for the playing about I do with modular I'm better with small sub-mixers.
There is almost an argument for buying a few Befaco Out v3's as leveled Outs to a desktop Mixer.

I emailed a suggestion to Befaco a bit back, make an STMIX that has Stereo Mutes and Pan control attached, thats what I need/want, and it would make the STMIX a better more functional part when coupled with the Hexmix, and in turn the Hexmix more appealing with its mono panned and EQ'd channels with Stereo effects returns.

My Current mixers are; Befaco STMIX, 2x Doepfer A-138s (for percussion mixing), and a Happy Nerding 4xMix.
There are so many modules that are Stereo, I think I have 6 stereo-capable modules in my rack now and add the outputs of the 2x A-138s's and thats 8x Stereo outs I need before thinking about Mono.

I'll leave this here, in its vaguely confused state :)

@swaminstar I use the Sphincter VCA most days.

@Ronin1973 I'm doing exactly this.

@Lugia Sounds pretty interesting that. So you can use a VCA prior to the filter as an accent (etc) control with the post-Filter VCA shaping the sound.

Thanks :) This was certainly a fun patch.... fairly sure the Moon Phase filter from Patching Panda might be my next DIY build to compliment the Chainsaw & ST Modular SVCA (though the latter is a weird VCA, quirky is probably the best description).

Just a mellow filtered thing....

There might be a couple of mins of Silence at the start of this as the audio capture didn't start in OBS.
Second patch with Acidrain Chainsaw, heading through HNVCF and Omsonic FLF on separate channels going into Monsoon Clouds and I've got the Rebach VCF-AB being fed some noise and self resonating with the Befaco Burst plucking and envelope ratchet triggers.
I literally just found the most simple fun too, Noise out of the Disting, into a VCA then into a Channel of the ADDAC103 and ride the 103 as a filter with the VCA for all manner of lovely blippy sweepy grunge from a simple noise source :) then thru the Pico DSP.

I should probably say that each of the filters is on a different Stereo channel, that may or not be obvious with the Mimeophon set on Skew.

@GarfieldModular - Thanks, I need to look at working on something more slow in progression.

@Farkas - Punch is great, great for plucky blips and filter ascents, and sooo good for dirty acid lines with the Rebach VCF-AB.

@Lugia - The worlds longest URL courtesy of Reverb :) I'll have to have a listen to some Jarre see what you mean, I'll admit I'm not a massive fan of the Phaser sound but if it works in Oxygene I'll check it out. Cheers

Using Stepped and Stepped Random into a couple of filters, Monsoon Clouds on Reverb from the STO via HNVCF, a fairly heavily modulated Mimeophon(which receives a fairly slow clock to keep it something like musical) messing with a pattern from MI Marbles controlling the Befaco EvenVCO which heads through the Omsonic Funky Ladder Filter.
Added a bit of subtle Reverb onto the percussion elements (not BD) from the 2hp VERB.

Talking of AKAI, I bought a simple MPD218, which as a non-musically skilled person was an impressive step up in comparison to using a midi keyboard with Reason, with a different interface I was offered a new means to input notes and my tracks improved. This is part of the way I see Eurorack too, its a totally new interface with a totally new way of inputting or creating notes.... In short, Brilliant Fun!

Though I doubt I'll be able to program Ba-Ba-Black Sheep on the Eurorack like I could play on the Piano ;-)

Its like, User-Interfaces for life, not all interfaces work for all people, so if one particular interface helps create enjoyment and benefits one person then thats a happy win :)

I have 2x ALM PipSlope and a WMS/SSF ADSRVCA, I find they are both great for different things, the PipSlope's Attack Decay isn't as good as the full ADSR if you want something chewy for a filter to get its teeth into.
If I need more I'll probably build a Befaco ADSR as it does pretty much the same as the Instruo Ceis but a touch cheaper.

VCO>VCF>VCA or VCO>VCA>VCF?

Is there a way around that this should be or classically be wired?

I'm using both approaches to be honest, some filters seem to behave better in different configurations, for a filter that is high self-resonating I'll usually go VCO>VCF>VCA so the Envelope can completely cut off the sine resonation of the filter.. And one of my other filters seems to prefer being fed from the VCA and would distort if fed direct from the VCO.

Cheers :)

Fact is, we aren't gatekeeping people out of modular here...but we ARE trying to gatekeep people from making some really awful decisions and winding up with a generally-unplayable instrument.
-- Lugia

Here we go, this feels like starting an argument ;-)

I realise you always put the time in to write a heck of a lot, I read your first response and those of others and I just think, "way to go, disheartening another person who is interested in modular", then the response from the post originator was clearly disheartened.

I'm not a fan of this, I dare say some of the words written to me on my first post on this forum made me think WTF and Who the F***! Hardly the hi and welcome to the forum, be careful what you spend, DON'T DO MODULAR!

I feel there are more beneficial manners of helping, Blunt Critique is your best mate telling you that that thing you built is sh!t, you laugh and buy them another Pint, not a person they have never met on a forum they have just joined because of an interest in making music / sound or simply something for pure enjoyment.

So in general, I do feel there is a lot of helpful words within the responses on this forum but folks need to chill a bit.

And I'm totally fine with it if you don't think I should be pointing this out ;-)

But don't let that put your off experimenting ;-)

I'm pretty sure I attacked starting modular from an "unpopular" angle, that has not stopped me having a load of fun in the process.
Now I find myself at the point where my Modular Rack is more about swapping one module out for another, sure I have a wish list of modules, but its relatively cash neutral at the moment as I sell things I find I don't need.

VCV confused the hell out of me to be honest, I found the hands on experimentation of having real modules in front of me to be more educational and fun! Its got to be fun!

It helps to have an idea what you want your rack to be from the start but these things evolve as you go, just start simple and small, I got a lot of mileage out of 10-12 (relatively cheap) modules in a Tiptop Happy Ending Kit case.
