Hello,
I'm trying to finish this rack, its main purpose is to mangle field recordings and effecting/mangle my other synths sound (0-Coast and Folktek Mescaline).
I currently own all the modules, out of the rack I have the following modules available: X1L3 Wreckage, 4ms RCD and 2 TTA One samplers.
I enjoy resampling with the PG simple sounds, like birds chirping, then mangling them in something different.
I'm having the feeling it is still missing something though, some extra modulation (like a straightforward LFO with different shapes and a dedicated analogue noise source for the SM), and more tools to process sound (a filter bank maybe?)
I'm planning to sell soon the MI Ripples, as after a year owning it, I'm still not liking it for my "needings".
What are your thoughts? How would you improve it?
Any kind of feedback would be greatly appreciated!
What would balance out this system in your opinion? What is the perfect way to interface it with the rest of the gear while replacing some of the functionality in the hole that is left from where the neutron was going to go (i'm considering leaving it out of the case).
I have some of the modules here already and more are on their way. Just brainstorming where to take it from here. I would like some more sequencing ability either through midi from my elektron boxes or a sequencer in eurorack format. Also would like it to function as a standalone unit without the neutron if needed, so I am looking at dual vcos that would be good to replace the neutron's and probably some more modulation. Also... any other glaring things I am missing? Other things I think i might need more of are cv offset / attenuverters / vcas / clock modulators. Thanks for any advice, very appreciated.
Just slowly putting this thing together.. trying to decide if the Performance mixer is overkill or not, i'm super interested in the Metron for sure especially with the Votlera... BUT that's a looooottt of space
[May 6, 2020] I used an Erica Synths 6u x 104HP case for interactive controls. The Tete is on order, and I keep fiddling with the layout, but there's a good deal of expression potential with this case. I use some flat 6ft ethernet cables with the multicore to patch over to the main synth rack, and tend to use external unbuffered mults for triggers and gates. They're cheaper and they don't take up rack space. I could probably use more cross-patching capability between racks, but it is what it is.
[May 6, 2020] Just assembled a Make Noise 3U skiff with clock, seq, touch, drums, and a multitool. I chose the Pam's over the Octocontroller for this rack since it has Euclidean capabilities. I wanted to put the Jornalogue Compare2 to up the controlled variation, but was just a little short on HP. I do not enjoy the 2.5mm sliding nuts in the skiff. At one point, I also wondered if I should have just dusted off the Digitakt and skipped the whole skiff. That quickly passed, and here we are.
Just had to record a quick lo-fi electro tribute to Florian Schneider of Kraftwerk, whose death was announced just a few hours ago. Kraftwerk's music is a major influence on me, as I'm sure it is for many of you as well, and I wanted to pay tribute quickly.
So last news, I got my Bitbox, its all good, took Steve a while, and he sent me the wrong tracking number first too. He's only online like once a week which probably should be said beforehand when selling stuff... Maybe that's just my opinion but I do sell stuff too
Thanks @Ronin! Due to Lugias Tipps I changed a bit in my System. Thinkin about to start a 2. Rack in the near future but till then, iam patching, noodling and learning with my stuff i have so far. take a look at my rack and tell me ur oppinion :-) I have a Beatstep Pro for sequenzing as well
Here's an easy rule-of-thumb for modulation... if there's an attenuator or attenuverter (a knob that controls the amount of anything) in the patch, you can insert a VCA into the chain and modulate THAT.
That's not the only way to modulate something. But it's one of the easiest ways to bring some "movement" into your sound. Not all modulations have to be these huge sweeping affairs. Even some subtle amounts of modulation can go a long, long way... especially when you are modulating multiple things.
Thank you very much, GarfieldModular!
Yes, Plaits is perfect pairing with Soma Lyra FX. Also I have some ideas with other modules. New video coming soon! :)

The database includes too many racks to simply sort by name or date. Would be great to sort by most discussed for example (on the homepage, there's a section "Hot racks" so I'm assuming the data is available).
I'll second this. In fact, having an overall "not modules" section for modular hardware to cover things like cases, rails, power supplies, patchcables, etc would be a smart idea.
I think I'd be great to have a section in the marketplace where people can post ads for cases, enclosures, etc in the various modular formats. Not sure how easy it'd be to set it up to be as sophisticated than for the modules but at least having a forum subsection for this would be a good start. What d'ya think?
Oh.... that makes it, to decide what to consider to be the next VCO/DCO, even more difficult, because the other one I am considering is indeed the Cs-L, if looking at the larger oscillators.
Why can't we just all win the lottery so we don't have to choose and just can buy whatever we want to have it tested and play with? ;-) Just kidding.
Kind regards, Garfield.

Some more ideas...? Well, then you might perhaps want to consider the Erica Synths - Black Octasource, a hell of a psychopath of a module that can make even the most boring module sound like a good module. The modulation possibilities are fantastic, mind the modulation possibilities that the Octasource can provide to other modules. It might be in the beginning (when you get to start to know this Octasource) a bit rough module to tame, but once you got it in your way under control, you can do influencing other modules on some real nice modulation level with this beast.
And if you and the Octasource completely want to go bananas then modulate the Octasource too, nothing is real after that any more ;-)
Kind regards, Garfield Modular.

Oh that's nice! Thanks a lot for sharing and demoing the Lyra8-FX module. You got some nice sounds and effects there :-)
I like the Plaits module by the way, got it myself as well, was worth the effort to get it and real nice sounds can be created with it, as your demo track shows, obviously.
Thank you, take care and kind regards, Garfield.
P.S.: It goes without saying that I can't wait for your next track ;-)

Bitbox looks cool. I'll look into that a bit more tonight. I do have a Nutella/tsunami that I built which is a polyphonic drum/sampler but it's a bit on the fritz, so maybe that is a good replacement.
I previously had 2 smaller cases, but got an 84hp intellijel case as a gift, so I have decided to combine all of my modules, resulting in the mix you see below. I am mainly into beats/techno (hence all the NE) but have a taste for ambience here and there and seem to be able to get it all from this setup so far. I'd like to fill the case and I do have a few ideas (like maybe Pam'sNW and perhaps another voice). I know the whole "you know your own synth best and it depends on what you want to achieve with it", but I am just hoping for some outside thoughts on what others would do or where they would take this setup next. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated. I should also probably note that I also have a beatstep pro as well, so I'm pretty set on sequencers, so I think?
How is your experience with the DPO of Make Noise, is it worth the investment? I am (extremely) happy with the STO of Make Noise but I wonder (looking at the price) if the DPO can cause me that much pleasure as well?
No doubt! DPO has a very cool, rubbery FM sound. It is also nice to be able to use linear and exponential cross FM modulation at the same time.
That said, I love the Instruō Cš-L too. It has a different sound. More.. rigid, harsh even, but good. It has quite many functions that the DPO lacks, such as ring modulation, fold on both oscillators, more outputs and so on. It is warranted to have both.
I also notice there is an original Terminal up for sale at €280 - this blows my mind!! How this is still for sale at that price is beyond me - worth at least €100 more!!
Why is it that the really, really, good gear so often gets ignored or passes under the radar like this?
To be clear, I also have the original Terminal and that is not going anywhere - superb bit of kit! Both terminals are - but I can only justify keeping one and I made my decision long ago that the original was the one to keep... custom vactrol envelopes - hell yeah!!
Anyone know of any other function generators that let you change the shape of the envelope with affecting the length?
If you click the "Panel Selector On" tab in the upper right of your screen, you can select the black panel version on the module in your rack. I think the black panel is the second option.
My fresh composition, based on my new Soma Lyra8 FX module. Here I used it to create crispy pad with Mutable Instruments Plaits. Other modules used here and full patch explanation you will find on YouTube under the video.
Better to listen with headphones at high volume to hear all beauty of Soma FX distortion.
I dont mean the LE version, which is there
I mean the normal version, which is there only in silver...
according to WMD, there will only be black mixers in future, so this should be on the modules list...
I'm kinda thinking of options, Put the Roland Boutiques in front of me and I make something like Acid Techno.
I was considering the bottom row of my 'Wish list' that would give the option of more dance like stuff but also give me some bleepy bloopy fluttery bits to sit around a more ambient piece.
Enjoy your spare HP, don't rush to fill every last space, this is not like filling sticker books. Resist the urge to 'complete' your rack, its never complete so just relax.
Hi Garfield. Thanks for checking it out.
The patch was mostly just Rings with an Arpitecht clocked with Pamela's New Workout. I had a Zlob Diode Chaos slowly modulating the notes and rhythm parameters on the Arpitecht so that it shifted a bit over time, with the Odd output of Rings going through a Ripples filter, and both outputs of the Rings going into a Milky Way. I think I may have used some LFOs from Quadrax into the Ripples and Milky Way. You can sort of see the patch I used in the track photo on Bandcamp.
The only thing I did outside the modular was split the recorded one-take track in two within Garageband and layer the two halves so that they played off each other subtly with a tiny bit of panning. Fairly simple, quick, and lo-fi.
I'm typically inspired to make noisy, error-ridden, and glitchy music: Dark ambient, musique concrete, harsh noise, and that sort of thing, but I appreciate melodic and traditionally rhythmic stuff too.
Again, I really appreciate you listening. I'll be posting more experiments soon. Take care!
Wow! You can produce new albums faster than I can listen at them ;-)
I like the Cabrakan Tri track as a kind of light breeze before you get really serious with Haplkern Chetire, that's a nice track all right! And continuing listening at your album...
By the way, any chance that you are using the Deluge from Synthstrom Audible? If yes, would you mind to share your experiences with it (pros/cons, etc.)? On one hand I feel it's an interesting device but there is no dealer in Europe that imports it, so no way to try it out and it isn't a very cheap device either, so taking the risk of importing it: freight charges, import taxes and the struggle with customs is most likely not worth it. So the more (user) information & experience I could get about it, would be great and helpful.
Thank you for sharing and kind regards, Garfield.

Are you sure about in-rack percussion? That might use up quite some (future, new) rack space... Having said that, I got myself Tea Kick module from Bastl Instruments and I am (very) happy with that one, simple but nice and good to use. I am also enjoying Kick_Me from Snazzy FX, also an interesting module, with the clip switch you can change the sound quite a bit, that gives it a certain "bite" to it ;-)
Well good luck with your percussion plans and I look forward in hearing some interesting tracks with your hopefully soon acquired percussion stuff :-) It would be nice to hear from you what you decided on the percussion part.
Kind regards, Garfield.

If Plum does provide a cable that connects the 1UOC to the midi jacks, that's great... wasn't aware of that.
For the headphones: no, the 1u headphone module does not use the Palette output jack. You just plug your patch cords from your sound source into the headphone modules two inputs, and voila, you're all set.
Thank you for that thoughtful reply! Here are some considerations for this case:
-I am trying to keep this as tiny as possible, so I'm hopeful to use the Palette format. I need this case to fit into a backpack for travel, and ideally to be able to be powered with a portable battery for a long time. This is going to get used in the woods and will almost certainly be taken on long bike rides. One dumb yet large plus for my use case with a Palette is there's a protective lid available for it. I'm open to a skiff, but logistically I don't have the idea as firmly in hand.
-I was thinking I could use 1UOC with Hemisphere Suite and Captain MIDI to use the Palette MIDI- is there any reason that wouldn't work? Plum Audio supplies cables with 1UOC specifically to hook up to Palette MIDI connections. The hope would be to use Ableton CV Tools when I felt limited by what's in the case.
-Is the Headphones 1U not actually necessary to use the Palette output jacks? My understanding was that the stereo outs hook up to the Palette 1/4" jacks.
-I'm most interested in getting pretty drones with this, so I won't be devastated without too many modulators.
I think you're going to find yourself wanting a larger case, or smaller modules... you're going to want more modulation sources.
For the original question: it's a toss up. You get a little added flexibility from the Duatt, at the expense of some of the features of the other VCA. I would go the Duatt/VCA route myself.
Finally, another unsolicited thought. You don't have anything here that makes use of the Palette's I/O or midi... which basically means you're overpaying for a very small case. The portability of the Palette is great... but think about how much cooler this system would be if you just picked up a 104 hp skiff, replaced the 1u modules with 3u versions (18 hp), then still had 24 hp of space to play with?
I have had mine up for sale for ages, at what is now a very low price considering the new price, it's in perfect condition cosmetically and functionally, but no one is interested.
What's up? It's a great bit of kit and an awful lot of value for money - help me understand?
Please suggest a reasonable price as I need to sell this - I am not desperate or in trouble - but do need to maintain some income from somewhere and selling off some gear seems a sensible way to do that at the moment.
Essentially I am open to offers just to get it shifted - can anyone help here?
Moreover, I think we need a system to discourage retaliatory rating, although I recognise that that will involve more work for the site managers.
-- phinland
It's also not easy to settle on a fair system. Every automatized system will have its flaws, and they would inevitably get exploited by some, and/or favor one party over the other. In the end, sites relying heavily on ratings (eBay, etc.) all offer the possibility to appeal to Human arbitration, which is something modulargrid's staff might not want to spend time on - and I may not want to pay for their extra work.
Besides all that, I just bought @klodifokan 's Nutella Tsunami and it's great.
I have no use for this at the current time, I am working 100% in modular and always recording live performances, but I know some people who might be very interested, especially at that price point - very cool!!
I'm wondering if there's any reason to pursue an Intellijel Duatt+1U VCA combination over the After Later DVCA. Same amount of rack space, but what might I gain or lose by choosing either of those options? I definitely want to pursue the SWN/Mimeophon/Arbhar combination, and O+C seems like fun with that. With the headphone out 1U, that leaves 22hp in the 1U row if anyone thinks it'd be better to pursue a Noise Tools or something. Would love to hear ideas!
All being well my next two modules will be a fairly standard oscillator and some more modulation, the Electrosmith 3340 VCO and the DivKid/Instruo ochd.
Then I need to start thinking about a bit more rack space and looking at some in-rack percussion.
Enjoy your spare HP, don't rush to fill every last space, this is not like filling sticker books. Resist the urge to 'complete' your rack, its never complete so just relax.
I play ambient music and am interested in granular synthesis. I have an idea of what I want -- see my sketch below for reference (1U row just added to demonstrate the nifty case, this will just be 3U). I'm looking for advice on a couple cheaper utilities to round the system out. I think the gaping holes in my planned system are VCA's and mod sources, so suggestions on bang-for-buck compact options are appreciated! I'm happy to invest in a VCF and an EG later given what I want out of Plaits.
I'm thinking about getting a Cre8Audio Nifty Bundle, and I was initially inspired by the way Nick Batt was using it in this sonicstate fun friday jam. I'm mostly just interested in a simple, minimal monosynth for plucky ambient sequences and drones.
I can definitely see myself outgrowing the system in the not too distant future, but I am prepared for that and am interested in keeping it small and simple with very limited functionality. I'm eager to learn more about granular synthesis with Clouds and I love its use as a delay and reverb machine. Plaits is incredibly versatile and provides enough of the plucky resonator goodness that I like in Rings, which was my other top contender for a digital sound source. I'm looking at getting both Plaits and Clouds from Momo Modular (unless you can suggest a better budget option!).
I understand that the cre8audio modules are mediocre, but I do think Cellz seems fun, and I can use the Chips LFO to advance the sequencer for now and use its other out as a mod source. I should also be able to use its oscillators to modulate Clouds at audio rate. If I get $30 for Chips in the future it will have paid for itself.
At this point a Maths or a Rampage seems like the sane choice, but I hate the aesthetic of both and I don't think they'll fit into my starter budget. I'd like to get enough utility to make this a considerably fun system from the start. Is there a multi-function LFO or VCA or some combo I can get for cheaper?
I have the entire starting point thus far for this system priced out at around $625, and I have roughly 175 left to spend. I know that's hardly anything in this realm, so I'd love it if there was something from Doepfer or a maybe couple things from 2hp that folks could recommend. I figure a used Disting MK3 could be an option, or maybe an Ornament & Crime if I can find a good deal?
What do you think? What am I missing? I've owned a few semi-modular synths but this is my first shot at a standalone eurorack system, so I'm sure there are glaring issues with my design. Any input appreciated!
