This module failed on me. Also I don't particularly appreciate that the attenuation is post-quantizer.
Scion will quantize the output, but if you want to attenuate on a per channel basis, it will throw the quantized signal out of tune. This is due to the channle attenuators being post quantizer. In my own patches, I would almost always put the attenuator pre-quantizer. If the atteniation is post quantization you might as well have just left is as a sample and hold function. At least Instruo had the sense to set the slew post-quantization; however, it is not nearly long enough to be helpful to me in many situations. The way this module is designed doesn't make a lot of sense to me. I have spoken with Instruo about this, and he seems to like how it's set up. We have agreed to disagree on these points.
Another bummer about this module was that it malfunctioned on me during the warranty period, and Instruo didn't believe me that it was busted, so I had to fix it myself. Even after I sent videos of the module after I had it fixed, with the explanation of what was malfunctioning from the engineer who worked on it, Instruo still threw shade and acted like I was lying or just didnt know what i was talking about. Not cool....

Thanks for reaching out. The module went defective several months ago, and I have since resolved the issue. I am just getting around to letting the world know about it now.
I was able to prove my module was defective at long last; however, it took so long that I was forced to replace the module with another LFO. I don't normally trust a module after it fails on me, so I sold Ochd.
I certainly don't mind providing videos. I have offered MANY videos to a long list of companies whose gear has failed while under warranty (I have even sent videos of the mute switches Befaco made for you). I am often put into a situation to prove myself to these people. I don't mind sending videos to troubleshoot the issue; however, I do not enjoy when people assume I am lying or just a fool who doesn't know how to use the gear.
Whenever I contact the manufacturers about failed modules, I get the same response, “This isn't the normal experience we see in eurorack”. However, with the high rate of manufacturer defect I have witnessed, it does seem like the typical experience from where I sit. Companies tell me there is a 1% failure rate within the eurorack industry, however, the failure rate in my studio is almost 40%. No lie.....
As for Instruo, the experience has been so bad that when the next Instruo module malfunctioned on me (which was the Scion, and it was still under warranty. In all, I've had three Instruo modules fail on me), I had a friend fix it rather than send it to Instruo. I initially contacted Instruo and sent several videos over the course of a week. He still didn't believe me. Even after I got back to him about how I had it fixed and that it was an issue with the input jack, he still acted like I was lying to him. Not a good way to run a biz. Especially when you charge top dollar for your devices.
My review here is to ensure others know about the low-quality standards of this company. I'd hate to have them find out the same way I did.

first of all I'm sorry to hear that this has been your experience with the module. It's absolutley not what I know others have experienced, it's not how Instruo operate for ochd or in general and this isn't what I'd expect. This isn't to deny your experience but simply to say that's not how things operate normally.

Just speaking generally videos are a really handy way for a company to hear and see what's happening and that can sometimes speed up the process and help diagnose.

Would you like to provide me with further information so I can follow this up with Instruo?

Mine broke within four months—inferior build quality. The folks at Instruo were extremely prideful and rude when I initiated the return—making me send many videos over multiple days before they believed it was busted. One of the LFOs wasn't working, and it was an obvious warranty issue, yet they still doubted everything I would say, even after I would prove it in a video—horrible experience. I would advise finding another LFO. I would not recommend Instruo at all. I have had 3 of their modules fail due to poor manufacturing.
Horrible module made by an awful company.

I want to build my first rack. I have a vage plan what modules I want but I am sure I am forgetting something. Or something is redundant maybe?
The music it should make will be mostly for ambiance, indie game music. A take on modern 8 bit music.
I have a Microfreak for clock gate and note input. As a delay and reverb I will use my Microcosm.
All Befaco will be bought as a kit and I will build it myself.

I agree that those two are nice modulation sources.
I was more referring to audio rate modulation, to achieve new timber. I love modulating Generate 3, it cn do so many interesting sounds.
Maybe Orbit 3 can do such duty, no idea - I don't have it (it's probably very wild at it ?)

I have no idea if the Medusa can do audiorate - and this is something that I will test asap :)

@farkas – I’ll have to check out Melvins stuff, sounds ace. You also reminded me to blow the dust off my Strat... Now days I’m a diehard Doepfer user and have found this creatively inspiring as you have to think more cleverly around patches with more basic style modules.
Regarding post, I was alluding more to finding myself listening and watching the synth enthusiasts who got me into modular many years ago and have yet to see any head turners in 2023. I wonder if this is symptom of new modules releases, changing platforms, or just changing music tastes in general…

@wishbonebrewery – maybe I need to add a pint of the good stuff into my creative workflow. In 2023 I’ve also found myself gravitating towards coding rather than hardware builds, as VCV rack seems like a great entry point for new enthusiasts.

@geusensdriesmusic / @JimHowell1970 – completely agree, maybe the quick solution is just to get on with recording and writing music rather than procrastinating on everything else happening around me with eurorack. Should probably get attending local modular meet ups also.

@Sweelinck – Modular for me has always been about building a custom instrument personal to me. I come from a Violin background, so having to pick the right modules – just like choosing the right sounding Violin, makes sense to me. I do like your analysis of what it means to be inspired, so thanks for that.

A musical instrument can inspire musical works and even the music of all composers during a whole century. The invention of the piano ('piano-forte', the power of expressing nuances) has inspired a century of romanticism. The harpsichord alone could not have offered this path.

But human beings can also individually create their own path with the same tools. Debussy and Rachmaninov had the same piano but their music was totally different.

Things are not one way.

Someone once wrote that among the best musical spirits of our time should be included the creators of electronic instruments. He wasn't wrong.
Only the modesty of people like Bob Moog or Dave Smith (Dieter Döpfer or Emilie in the modular world) could contradict this statement.

Too close proximity between the 5HP RackBrute power module and the internal power supply part of some mixers can generate a noise/tone. I’ve experienced that. In this case, you just have to move them a little bit apart.

My goal here is to build: dual, symbiotic ideas-boxes, that compliment my hardware setup.
Boxes will be mostly used in a small studio environment, however it is a shared space, and must be mobile.

I have what I call my Elektron Trinity (ET), which is comprised of: Syntakt, Digitone and Analog4
Each have lovely sequencers built-in that I use to build the foundation for my music.
I'm also really deep in to iOS software and want to use an es-9 so my iPad Pro can integrate.

I'd like to explore and potentially include more Joranalogue modules like the Switch 4, Route 4 and Select 2. Could anyone suggest resources for, or examples of this?
Perhaps that could be helpful to a visual learner?

Creativity has nothing to do with gear. It's you that needs to be creative with the tools you've got. Completely re-think your system, make a smaller setup and focus on certain ideas or modules, read Allan Strange's book on synthesis techniques... For sure you'll get creative again.
Also: there's some modules being released that are completely new like f.i. Klavis Grainity, MN Spectraphon (maybe not completely new), phase modulation oscillators... I'd just stop looking at all those new things and record an album with the stuff you allready own. ;-)

perhaps go even further than this... create a single patch - ie a costom instrument and create a whole album with it... you can change the tempo, notes played, any switches and knobs, but not the patch cacles... you'll really learn to play that instrument... then pull the patch cables, create a new instrument and repeat...

After ca. 24h you are not a new user anymore. The limit is just there to keep the bots out.

Maybe people gravitate to modular from certain music styles they enjoy, though the entire point of it is experimentation to me.
I'm quite prodedure lead as a person and its always been an important part of all my work from mechanical Engineering, to Print Finishing & Graphic Design then onto Brewing, so experimenting with different procedures to make sound is about all I need. I'm sure I tend to make "techno or pinged etheral ambience" ;-) plus experimented with more Drum & Bass and Noise patching.
@Farkas is right, dive back in and patch something up differently, do something you don't normally do.

Hmmm... I would disagree that modular artists are only making techno or ambient, though modular is great for those styles. I know the Melvins, for instance, just completed a modular album of Throbbing Gristle covers. Like any synth music, modular is only limited by your imagination and/or choice of modules. What kind of music are you making?
I'm kind of at the point where I don't need to shop for much gear to explore the kinds of sounds I like, so I'm not sure what's going on in the "synthfluencer" and retail world. Everything is cyclical, so I'm sure there will be ups and downs.
I've found that running everything through my rack is fun... guitars, bass, drum machines, vocals, keys, you name it. If you don't have a preamp of some sort (or multiple preamps!), get one.
This post sounds more like you are bored with the instrument you've built. The Fender Stratocaster has basically been the same for 70 years, and it's still inspiring people. Dive back into your rack and try something new.

A voltage and milliAmp meter for your rack. Gives you at-the-moment insight into the power draw of a module (or set of modules) so you can insure you’re feeding the right amount of power, and also validating the manufacturers specs.
Handy when you’re pushing the limits of how much stuff you can put in a rack section.

What's so hard with giving a seller or buyer a thumbs up?

When I sell something, I often agree to a proposal, take the time to wrap it up really well, and keep the buyer up to speed untill it arrives at the buyers house. I always like to verify if it arrived and in what condition. In the past one would give a thumbs up, but nowadays after even asking to consider a thumbs up, sellers seemingly just can't be bothered. I personally find this annoying to the point of acting in the same way.

Mind you, it's not solely MG, I have the same issue with Reverb and other online marketplaces with possibilities for reviews. Which is a shame really as it sort of filters who is trustworthy and who isn't, both sellers and buyers, so you're basically helping out the community in a way.

So please consider those thumbs.

Hey, I love mountains too. Sounds like a fun jam session with modular and beer. The mountains remind me of when we were happy with my family. When I was in high school, we lived in Sandpoint, Idaho, but then we moved when my parents divorced, and I lost contact with my father. It became my childhood trauma. I read some research papers here https://studydriver.com/childhood-trauma-essay/, and I liked the advice to get into music. Now modular synths help me deal with sadness and nostalgia. I hope you get your workflow and recording up and running soon. Good luck in achieving your goals through music.
