More, inexpensive VCAs since you'll potentially have so many voices, you'll want more for controlling intensity of modulation.
Unity mixer for mixing triggers together.
Clock dividers for triggering events at later defined times - may not need these as much with a BeatStep Pro since you can use a channel to essentially program your own.
Envelope follower for taking outside sources and converting their changes in volume/amplitude into a voltage. Plug guitar in, strike a string; the sharp attack and moderate decay can be sent to a filter's cutoff, etc.
More inexpensive noise and sample & hold modules: noise for getting texture as a sound source, but also makes a great textural modulation source. Aging tape, foggy sounds.
Sample & hold uses a clock source and an input to create stepped voltages. It's great for random modulation timed to a rhythm. You could subtly modulate the length of an envelope that's tied to a rhythm sound, providing little fluctuations in how long it rings out.

Sorry for apparently necroing this thread but I'd like to chyme in now that the brilliant panel swap option has been applied. I've been meaning to ask: is there a way we (as users) can start merging modules? Most of the times the different versions available only have panel/design as the main difference whereas all other characteristics remain intact (or should be equivalent).

I wouldn't mind helping reduce the clutter by merging some modules in one and being able to change the panel (as is already available).

Thanks

Just wanted to second this notion. I visit MG through the mobile a lot and I need to apply ninja skills to avoid moving a module (thank goo I don't have sausage fingers!). :) So yeah, if/when this is an option that will be great.

@vendenperros was a great user to make deals with

really nice guy!

Yes, the 4ms (PEG) pingable envelope generator is useful as it creates envelopes and divisions of envelopes in time with a clock pulse. Modulation with no way to sync to a tempo can be limiting.

I'm not familiar with the Tempi, but it looks very interesting!

Here is a useful video on practical uses for clock dividers by Mylar Melodies.

I would also highly recommend checking out Mylar Melodies channel; he is very good at explaining modular concepts.

Regarding the sequential switch
https://www.modulargrid.net/e/doepfer-a-151-rev-2

Thanks for the reply. By PEG do you mean the pingable enevelope generator? Its 20 hp. I dont really have enough room. I got a few more thinks this morning. You mentioned a clock divider. I got Tempi. I also got a Wogglebug. Will that introduce the randomness to switching? I dont know what a sequential switch is and I couldn't find out how to look it up. Could you give me a name. I went a little crazy this morning. I also got an Octone and another VCA. Again thanks for the help.

ModularGrid Rack

I'm guessing you use some kind of external step sequencer? if so, maybe something to orchestrate all these modules rhythmically; time sync'ed modulation is very useful! 4ms PEG is good for this! plus a clock divider and maybe a sequential switch to mix things up a bit. Also look to introduce some randomness to your switching.

Trying to get into the Eurorack gig after I get my income tax. Wondering if this is a good start? I want to go with Trogotronic's m-168 case though. Any help would be appreciated. I'm trying to go for a drone/noise/ambient sound

It was great making deals with user @berth9999

Really nice guy!

I think I got a pretty good on a Jones O'Tool Oscilloscope deal with @ping_panic. Priced much lower than 80% of scheiders I see a lot. And almost new. (Foil still on the display.) Boxed very good. Good communication. Good deal. :-)

Watch out when dealing with @ping_panic
I was the first to reply, I accepted his request for two modules and than he dumped me for a higher bid.
Not cool at all!

seeing this new version now leaves me a little disappointed. not sure any more if it is the mixer which would suit my requirements best. what happened to the old deign? there's only four channels now; on a larger footprint.........ummm.....

Thank you for the link to the dual, Mopoco! I'll drop it in for the moment until I take a photo of my own module and upload it to my modular on here. The Neutron Sound one will be a little closer to what my implementation actually is.

(I should actually photo a few of the DIY panels, to more accurately represent my modular as well.)

too many wires so the faceplate won't close.
when I powered this unit up, I found complex noise at TR inputs of teletype coming from floating opamp inputs.
they travel through TR threshold so scripts may trigger randomly, even touching faceplate affects it.
a bit daunting at first, soon replaced by curiosity of exploring unusual expresssions.

btw, it's ceremonious to have designs of peter, gil, brian, oliver in a small box.

That s what i have, what modules can i put to complete this set? Any suggestion?
Thanks

Thanks for the thread.... will try this :)

Is it just me or is the firmware upgrade for the Stillson Hammer mkII a total nightmare? I have spent an age online researching and downloading software for my recently purchased pickit2 but my mac doesn't recognise it.
Any ideas...... anybody

- Befaco Instrument Interface (i square) --> DIY --> 122€
- Befaco Rampage --> DIY --> 165€
- Befaco Joystick --> DIY --> 97€
- Eowave Titan --> occaz --> 80€
- Synthrotek Atari Punk Console --> DIY --> 50€
- Eowave Zone BF --> occaz --> 60€
- Synthrotek DS-M --> DIY --> 98€
- Bastl Knit Tider --> occaz --> 125€
- Tiptop Happy Ending Kit --> occaz --> 100€
Total : 896€

I'm planning to (diy) build a module like this but instead of the pins I'll use normal switches.

I'm fairly new to the electronics side of things, am I thinking too simple here?
schematic

The original module is passive too, so no Op-Amps used.. I wonder if I need any resistors?

For reference / correction:

The SSM2044 VCF / ENV listed in the top row of the New Europeans is not fully correct. I have a DIY dual SSM2044 that I made in 2005, in that position. The SSM2044 / ENV module was the only SSM2044 module that I could find in the grid.

Good trades with @AVJR and @vendenperros
Modules in perfect condition and both sellers were very friendly, and quick to reply.

If a compactflash card could talk, it would say "yes".

Im a carpenter student planning my first venture into eurorack.
Thinking mostly of erica pico and dreadbox white line modules, maybe some doepfer vintage edition....
Im a total noob here in eurorack just started reading about it all, an oh boy, is there some reading to do!

Anyhow, this is a system im thinking of, i know im missing those all important utility modules, but im not that well aware of it all that i could make educated guesses what i need.

Bassicaly just puting this up for any random remarks, general comments, ideas etc.

Only reason why chose to build it in two 84hp rows is that a local store sells the doepfer diy kit 1.

Id really like it to be three 84hp rows but....poor student budget.

oh Man -- I just now got it! I have no idea how to play it. LOL

Yup, I do have more or less an idea of what I want :)
I have actually seen Surgeon live once haha! Very nice indeed

Thanks for all the help anyway, it's likely that I'll build my own eurorack case to save some $$$
Might pick your brain when it comes to it...... Cheers!

ah nice, you already have a bit of gear then.
It sounds like you're starting to get a better idea of what you are wanting to achieve.

Check out some live sets from Surgeon on youtube, dude does some sweet live modular techno sets. He integrates his laptop and Ableton Live into the setup by clocking his modular system from Ableton so everything is in sync, and he just plays the modular live over the top of Ableton which is playing all the bits and pieces which is too hard to integrate into a small portable live modular rig.

goodluck

Since I already own a minilogue I think I'd just be going for one sound from the modular, perhaps later on two.
If I get a semi-modular synth the sound will start there and once I have enough money to get a second sound source (with VCO/VCA/envelope generator etc etc) I will have two sounds..

Anyway my beatstep has 3 sequencers, two for synths (1x minilogue, 1x modular) and one for drums. I would be using my MFB Tanzbär for drums and perhaps my volca beats. So yea really what I'm looking for from my modular synth is something that can function as a pad ór arp ór a bass, but not simultaneously. I can make either sounds from the minilogue aswell and atm I'm still running from Ableton Live so I could always use soft synths or samples for additional sounds.

Does the sequencing skiff get more hands on modulation and knobtwisting? More live interaction with that skiff?

Thread: AK47

ah yes, that it is. I overlooked it as mutable instrument panels look so clean, ive been getting deep into weird filters lately.

Just checked out some demos sounds like a pretty nice filter.

Depending on how many sounds you want to output from the system at any one time you may have to look into things like having multiple filters, quad VCAs, quad Mixers, to get the proper I/O in your system, but if you only want to output 1 arp / sequenced sound at a time then you don't need that stuff.

I havn't got that far into eurorack yet, so I would either presume that some compressor modules come with a side chain signal input or you might have to use something like a envelope follower, im not quite sure.

Drums are tricky, you can make them from basically anything and layer as many things as you want, everyone has a different perception on drums.

I do realize I might need a bunch more clock-kind-of-modules, although I can send clock, cv and gates from both my beatstep and my tanzbar, so it should be possible to get the "arp" running with little to no extra modules. I already found out that multipliers and dividers aren't always actually that expensive, so that may not be the hardest thing to acquire. In any case, can always extend later :p Don't have to be working right from the start haha

Also drums coming from a modular synth usually don't sound that impressive to me, so I'm happy to do most of the drum sounds from my drum machines... Only thing that I think about all the time is the sidechain compressor haha, making that digitally is super easy, but howwwwwwwww would you make that in a modular setup ?!!

Thread: AK47

Ripples is a filter sir

Well unfortunately its going to cost alot more money if you want it to be a live performing rig of some sort because you need additional sequencers, clocks, dividers, multipliers, envelopes, Quad VCA's and Mixers etc that you may not have needed otherwise in a studio just being a sound generator into the DAW.

The reason why the arps sound so good is because naturally hardware oscillators are more rich and lush compared to software and the hardware sequencers are really efficient to get results with while being hands on.

It looks like Colin is using the Intellijel Metropolis sequencer, I don't think its a arpeggiater module making it happen its something he has programmed himself into the sequencer.

You can just use plugins to process further without having to buy effects modules, but a good reverb and delay is always nice to have.

I bought Clouds for pads and drones aswell ;)
