Nice system!
I try to do the same kind of music.
If it's up to me, I'll add 2 panning modules to pan some of the voices to the side, or VC them so they move across the stereo image.
-- Vinnie_Lee

Thanks! It definitely makes it a lot easier putting this thing together when you have a goal for a specific type(s) of sound you're looking for, that's for sure.
Would the MI Frames not cover the panning? The description definitely says "Quadrophonic Panner". Would I be better off getting something more dedicated just to panning?

Made some more changes due to stock issues on some components.

ModularGrid Rack

I'm building this to do some slow wide drones mainly. And some mono basses, maybe a little bit sound design.
I also have a Korg SQ-1, and a Korg MS-20 Mini.
I want this to be all analogue. Will plan on a full digital system later.

  1. Do I need more modulations to do drones? With this system, I'll have 3 VCLFOs(up to 5, If I count the VCOs), 3 envelopes.
  2. Do I need Ringmod? Phaser?
  3. I like the 9U cases from Doepfer. Should I go for the plywood one(a-100lc9, $460) or the metal one(a100p9, $675)?
  4. Do you think a switching PSU is a better choice than the linear one that built in the Doepfer cases?

Any opinion is welcomed!
Thanks!

does the discontinued DixieCTRL work with this unit ( or 4 of these ?)
is there a expansion header on the back :??

Removed the Metropolis. I just realized I have a Beatstep Pro that I never took out of the box (it arrived shortly after my Cirklon did, Cirklon>BSP). Added a Linx to up my VCA's. With the space increase I added in a Dixie2+, replaced the Intellijel Mult with an MI Links. Added in a Blue Lantern attenuator.

Removed one of the Mother-32's and added in a Metropolis and Atlantis to give a bit more variety, while still retaining similar functionality and depth (and possibly a few more options?). Also added in a Shapeshifter to give some wavetable options (Is that covered elsewhere in this setup?). Also replaced the oscilloscope with an O'tool to open up a bit more space. WMD and Malgorithm are both bitcrushers (I intend to only have one, but I wasn't sure which to go with, so I left them both in for now), but not as easily attainable as other modules here. Is there a better option?

It's not updating the picture since I changed a few things, so you'll have to click to the page to see the updated version I guess?

So, I just did a massive gear purge, and now I'm looking to get into modular in a big way. I want this synth to mainly be based around two types of sound/music: John Carpenter esque type horror stuff (which from what I've heard, the Mother-32's can easily accomplish), and low-fi, downtempo, ambient, etc. stuff (which I feel like the MI modules will work great for). I've got midi-to-cv with the mothers, and sequencing through them. I have a Sequentix Cirklon which I run as a master clock to everything in my studio, and I intend to do that here as well (so that it can actually integrate into the rest of my setup). I either use a Vermona DRM-1 (via cv/cirklon) for drums, or just my DSI Tempest, so percussion isn't much of a concern.

What would you change/add to this setup to accomplish what I'm looking for? I feel like I'm lacking on traditional VCO, VCA, VCF modules, but I also feel like the Mother's are picking up slack there. Thoughts?

Edit: the SY-02, VCO-SUB, MOD, ADSR, Adaptor and Outs are modules I currently have, so while I can definitely remove those for space, I do already have them.

Edit2: Added in a DC2 and CV expander for it to give a bit more flexibility.

Edit3: Added in an Intellijel Mixer

Edit4: Added a small Mult and VCO to fill up a couple small blanks on the right side.

3685 EUR en Modular Square con el Medium Tank de Intellijel y el Dark Link de Doepfer, mas los Expert Sleepers que sabrá el carajo dónde se consiguen en España. WTF.

I just realized it's quite a bit over the mini case's power spec ("200 mA @ +/-12V and 50 mA @ +5V"). Gah. Then again, I guess if anyone actually did this (crazy?), they'd probably be fine with switching out the power for something else.

I made a joke about 2hp modules and a mini case, but then I got thinking "what if?"..... This seems like it'd be fun to me. Anyone have any suggestions for changes?

Thread: SUBFUS

I'd love to hear that!

December 0115 update:

Row #1 - left most: the Doepfer A-149-1, A-149-2, A-137-1 and Expert Sleepers Disting Mk2 are on their way to me, as I type.

Row #1 - the left most VCO is a Music From Outer Space 1V/oct. VCO converted to Euro format
Row #1 - the dual SSM2044 is only a panel that I found here. It's my Deathlehem / Barry Klein dual SSM2044 LPF
Row #1 - the 3 Pure VCAs are used to represent my 3 x CGS / René Schmidt triple input VCAs
Row #1 - the ES-12 bipdirectional switch is a Serge / CGS triple bi-directional switch

Row #2 - the 2 left most VCOs are Music From Outer Space 1V/oct. VCOs converted to Euro format

Row #3 - the pair of Universal Slope Generators are 2 x Serge / CGS USGs that I converted to Euro format

Also missing from this picture are:

  • Serge / CGS - 8 Step Programmer / Sequencer with Moog 960 Sequencer Play / Skip / Stop switches, for each step, for EACH direction (forward / reverse)
  • A second Serge / CGS triple bi-directional switch
  • A Music From Outer Space Echo Rockit

The 3 of them are mounted in a standard Serge 17"x7" cabinet, on top of the euro cabinet.

5 stars out of five for Heren! I just bought 2 modules from him, and it was great in every aspect - modules were exactly as described, prices were ok, delivery was fast, and the communication was very pleasant! Thanks!

Yes, please do make whatever you like for yourself, and enjoy the great sounds Ben made, and don't present it as though you're offering a module with his sounds - pretty simple, really.
-- jicamasalad

MG is not a shop. Even more so it's not DSC's or Ninstrument's shop. So if you educate yourself as to what is available for purchase through MG the mistake is obviously on you.

This really should all be Private Message material, right?
-- jicamasalad

Probably should have gone directly to the source and asked your questions?
Who's more foolish, the fool or the one that argues with him?

Sorry everyone for stinking up the 'grid.

You really are a cranky hamster today, aren't you?
What would Google show me?
You are the one who posted the module on Modulargrid, which means, actually, yes, it IS your job to educate everyone; if it's just for yourself, make it private so folks like me don't get bent out of shape that you're ripping off Ben Burtt.
Yes, please do make whatever you like for yourself, and enjoy the great sounds Ben made, and don't present it as though you're offering a module with his sounds - pretty simple, really.
But you're all licensed, so no problems, right?
So why so upset at me?

Try using Google next time and just appear to be the moron as opposed to opening up your mouth and removing all doubt!
Seriously, it's my job to educate everyone to what I am doing? Let me guess you're a high school teacher too when you are not moonlighting as Lucasfilm police. This module is for myself and no one else. I can make whatever I fucking want for myself!

this user has left ModularGrid

What a charmer you are!
And I thought I was the cranky one!

DSC, you are the one to provide the facts - but the module page has no technical specs whatsoever, (nor any indication that the sounds were officially licensed from Lucasfilm) so I should probably be forgiven for not "getting my fucking facts right". I guess the modified logo and lack of registered trademark symbol also made me suspicious of your module. Buying the book doesn't grant you the rights to repackage the electronics, last time I checked, but I'm sure your homage will be received in the right spirit.

What's sad is no talent ass clowns are allowed to post without getting their fucking facts right!
Ben Burtt and Lucasfilms were paid their royalties when I purchased the electronics straight from them.
I worship Ben's work and consider it the soundtrack of my life. This is done in complete homage to him and those like him.

this user has left ModularGrid

Why not go out and make some iconic sounds of your own, instead of ripping off Ben Burtt?
This module represents (almost) everything that is wrong with the current generation of synth users; boycott and shaming are the only reasonable responses to this rubbish!
And I guess I just outed myself as a cranky old man...guilty as charged, I suppose.

Thread: PAiA 4720

The 4720 is a VCO, not a VCA...

I changed it now. Add the 4710 VCA if you need it.

As seen in the Equipment list of this CD's sleeve.

@tiru

Good seller!

The premise is that the ultimate modular mixer can also invert and/or offset the signal, whether it be processing audio or control voltages. In the audio case, an inverter allows you to create new sounds by mixing together more than waveform from an oscillator or more than one output from a multimode filter, and inverting one of the inputs to create interesting harmonic cancellations and reinforcements. Adding an offset to audio waveform allows you to create asymmetrical distortion when fed into a wave shaper, or overdrive a filter or ordinary mixer. (For more on this and utility mixers in general, see http://learningmodular.com/choosing-utility-mixers-for-your-modular/)

The top row contains mixers that can also invert and offset the signal in a pretty straightforward manner.

The middle row contains more complex control voltage processors which can achieve the goal of mix, invert, and offset, but they may require a bit more thought or patching than the top row. Although less intuitive or immediate, the upside is that these modules should provide even more creative possibilities in your modular.

The modules in the lower row are missing one of our desired features, but are still very interesting mixer alternatives in their own right. For example, the RYO Ampmix can provide up to a 2x boost for each signal it mixes, allowing you to overdrive modules that don't have that option built into their own input controls.

If you know any other suitable modules on ModularGrid that I missed, let me know and I'll add them to this rack.

"Bypass" and "Spillover" are the labels for the switches. "Active" is the state. So to bypass, you switch the "Bypass" switch to the "Active" state.

Along with a Moog Mother-32

I am thinking of ordering this. Are there any thoughts on this module.

why has this person added 2 additional moog mother 32 items? Can we get rid of them?

Check, check, that is a test ...
Also: that rack looks great!

ModularGrid Rack

with this rack I want to do live performance of drones, meditation music, harsh noise. in the studio I would use it for bass synth, sound design, making sample libraries for video games, advertising, radio, movies. I think I can just use external reverb to save money and save space in the rack. Any suggestions?

Oh, and had a good experience buying modules from @penrose_riots as well!
