Hi Yunyun,

Lovely demo track of the Marbles! It's still on my wish list too, your demo track reminds me of getting one :-)

Thank you very much for sharing this with us and kind regards, Garfield.

Hi Audhentik

Thank you! :-) Yes, I love Plaits, you can use it in a quite mild patch however it can go pretty crazy too, either way, it's totally up to the user how to put Plaits into place in a patch. Great module indeed. Kind regards, Garfield.

Hi TumeniKnobs,

Oh that's a pity that you forgot how you made that great sound. Next time install a few cameras that observe exactly what you are doing so you can reproduce it ;-) Just kidding, I can't wait for more great sounds coming from you! Kind regards, Garfield.

Hi Audhentik,

Nice and interesting approach you got there with your setup! :-) Pity I threw away my Walkman years ago, I need to clean up my old cassette recorder, perhaps I can "misuse" that one for this purpose. Great idea!

I like creative ideas like this, hope to hear and see more from you again and kind regards, Garfield.

Hi TumeniKnobs,

Oh wow! This is so beautiful! So beautifully done and such a lovely long track, 26 minutes of pure pleasure! You have some lovely sounds in this track, for example that sound that comes into play just a bit after 18:00+ wow! I could die for a sound like that, so great, so thrilling! :-)

Excellent job and thank you very much for sharing this with us, kind regards, Garfield.

Hi TumeniKnobs,

This is a great track, one that gives a lot of positive energy, I like that. It's fun to listen at it and it's very playful. Nice video too, it tells me that I need to investigate a bit more into my Studio One ;-) I am currently only using it for importing the recording from the SD card (from a PreSonus mixer) and exporting it then to a stereo WAV file... need to make more use of it I realise :-)

Thank you very much for sharing this with us and kind regards, Garfield.

Hi Bleepadelic,

Oh wow! This is nice and super relaxed. I am going to use this for the moments I am working on my review reports. Sorry, just back from a week holiday, so the night isn't long enough the listen at the full hour but will do that during writing the review reports! :-)

Thank you very much for sharing this with us and kind regards, Garfield.

Hi Vow3ll,

That's pretty nice and special, especially in combination with the video it's good fun too! :-) I got a bit of the Matrix feeling too ;-)

I am watching and listening at it now for the second time, still big fun and a great sound! Thanks a lot for sharing this little wonder and kind regards, Garfield.

Hi Funbun,

Indeed, I finally managed to get to the Superbooth, this year is the first time for me. Sorry to let you know that I didn't check out the TBD module. I was, to be honest, more focussing on how can I use the AE modular synth together with my already existing Eurorack modular synth/system. Seems to be that's not too difficult, so I might indeed consider, for the (far) future, the AE modular synth as a kind of travel case system for me.

It's hard to believe how much synth you get for the money without sacrificing sound.

-- funbun

There you exactly hit the nail on its head. I was standing there at the AE booth and looking at their (I wasn't aware of that, I thought it would be their medium system or something) largest case and system they had and it was still rather small towards medium size and to me it looks like a lovely size to use it as a travelling case. So amazing how many modules their largest system can hold and how much you can do with it, seriously amazing indeed!

So instead of getting an Intellijel 7U case I am considering this now as well, difficult choice! :-) Kind regards, Garfield.

Hi Troux,

Ha, ha, thank you! :-) Yes, the beginning of indeed "electronic music" (thus not electronic) is indeed where "I come from", famous artists like Tangerine Dream, J.M. Jarre (early days), Kitaro, Vangelis, Klaus Schulze and the lot. So this patch was a lot of fun indeed. Thanks again and kind regards, Garfield.

Hi Toodee,

Oh yes, sorry, I was in a rush when I posted it. I have to do this by heart because I just recently removed this patch from my system, it was rather simple so hopefully with my remarks here you can rebuild that? Let me know!

So the Plaits was set to the third red-selected-sound counting from the top. All of them were set to full right (at about 5 pm) with the exception of the Morph knob that one was set at about 1:30 pm, that was the most difficult setting from this patch by the way, it took me a bit of time and adjustment of that Morph knob to get it perfect.

I didn't modulate much here, the only thing I did was taking a reversed-saw based LFO, set it slowly and used that as input to the 1V/oct on the Plaits. Then I used a very mild delay in-rack module (ACL - Dual Delay) but I think you can skip that if you don't have that and if I remember well, that was it (not 100% sure). Then outside the modular system I added a medium-low till medium tape delay using the Grand Canyon from Electro-Harmonix (no ping-pong for the thunder, for those other sounds at a certain point I activated the ping-pong delay effect) and some medium reverb I added with the Source Audio - Ventris Dual Reverb, using for A the plate reverb and for B the swell reverb (to make the thunder stronger and the thunder effect more emphasised). Most of the knobs were set around 1 pm on that Ventris (time & pre-delay a bit less if I remember well).

I am not 100% sure but I don't think I used a filter for this patch.

That's it I think. Let me know if you are able to reproduce it. Kind regards, Garfield.

Hi Funbun,

Oh that's nice! A nice long track (the Major Blues) that offers almost everything, very nice balanced track I feel, beautifully played! You make me think of buying an AE modular system, especially after talked with the AE modular guys at Superbooth, they almost convinced me :-) It's just that I still want so many other things otherwise I would go straight away for an AE modular system as a kind of travel case, it's so small yet the modules don't need much space so you end up with a semi-small case but yet a large system :-)

Thank you very much for sharing this with us and kind regards, Garfield.

Hi Yunyun,

Oh this is a lovely track, very subtle, quite impressive, oh man, can you please make more of this? :-)

Beautifully done video too by the way! It's nice to see you at work and the focus on the modules makes you want to buy it ;-)

What do people do when they can't discuss what they disagree on ?

-- toodee

Play modular synths? ;-)

Just kidding, I agree here with you Diego! More positive attitude, with or without discussions, is always welcome :-) I also agree with another earlier post from Jim (-Howell1970) that some people extremely overreact, that not only kills the discussion but also the good mood, that (the good mood) in my opinion should be kept in a forum like this. Kind regards, Garfield.

Hi Fred,

A lovely start of the track, nice happy music indeed :-) Not sure where the tough part is for listening, everything I enjoyed! You got a nice interlude around 9:30+ with some funny sounds. Just before 14:00 you pickup speed and rhythm again, ha, ha, around there you are using tons of effects, pretty funny and wild!

Thanks a lot for the detailed notes about the setup for this too, interesting to read as well as a big thank you for sharing this with us. Kind regards, Garfield.

Hi Baltergeist,

Your track "Uncanny Valley Draft" is just gorgeous! What a lovely nice, relaxed track. I could hear a track like this all day long, brings me back down to earth :-)

The "Bells Of Saint Confusus" is a great track too, in another way though. I love the experimental level of this track and the quite funny sounds; I love funny sounds! :-) Surprisingly after having listened at this track and after a hard day work, nice relaxed too, after these two tracks I feel I can handle another day... tomorrow, here I come...

All in all lovely to listen at and I don't mind more coming from your hands! Thank you very much for that and kind regards, Garfield.

Hi M01C,

Is your name - (or being the large letter "o") - - ? :-)

Well, I meant it's a lovely demo, nice to watch and I guess for people who don't know the NW1 yet, a good teaser to get one! Regarding sounds indeed it might not be always lovely though some of your example sounds are real good fun.

So all right then, let's call it a beautifully done demo :-) Kind regards, Garfield.

Hi Antonivs,

Well, now I do realise that ;-) No, I didn't know you had three modular cases, good to hear that, now I understand your reasoning, then it sounds indeed fair enough. Just in case you didn't had that, wanted to warn you. I am glad to hear for you this is rather fun and a puzzle how to come to a compact rack! :-)

Just one thing that wonders me, don't you feel it's pity to use in such small rack the HP space by the rather large 0-coast and 0-ctrl modules? Of course they are very powerful modules that can do a lot, so from that point seen, indeed it might make sense. Either way, I like to wish you good luck with your little-box-puzzle :-) Kind regards, Garfield.

Thread: Waldorf nw1

Hi MO1C,

This is a great and lovely demo of the Waldorf - NW1 module! Nice and clear camera view on this fantastic module too!

Such a pity that Waldorf decided to stop producing Eurorack modules :-( Instead they should have produced more different modules, I like their style and the spacious front plates, very comfortable user interface. They only should have used knobs with a better colour contrast regarding the indicator. That little black dot on a silver knob is not fantastic (depending on how the studio light falls onto the module).

Thank you very much for sharing this with us and kind regards, Garfield.

Hi Antonivs,

You know what they say here on this forum, right? You can never have enough VCAs, so add a 10 or 20 VCAs and then yes... might be... ;-)

I would miss some modulators like LFOs and EGs, so 10 or 20 of them too... then several filters for some variations.... em... all you need? ;-) If it's not too late you might want to consider a larger rack, you are limiting yourself here pretty much. Not even mentioned the expensive space you are using in this little box for 0-coast and 0-ctrl (remove them from this box and let them use their original casing saves you HP space and +12 V power supply troubles), both fantastic desktop-modules though! :-)

Have fun with the little box and kind regards, Garfield.

Coming back to the rack of Lugia... ;-)

A fantastic rack design Lugia!

May I ask why you choose the 960 Sequential Controler? From the "half million" ;-) sequencers/controllers, why this one, was there for you a particular reason to choose this module? I am usually not so much concerned about HP usage however this one is huge.

Do you know perhaps when the TipAudio Buchla modules start to become available?

Beautiful designed rack that, I agree indeed, should not exist, it should not be allowed, far too great ;-) You make me think of selling my house and replicate that rack! :-) Thank you very much for sharing this rack with us and kind regards, Garfield.

Hi Fred,

Long time haven't heard from you and now you surprise us with a nice long jam! It's great and nice to see you at work in this video, creating this jam. Lovely percussion and drums parts, looks like I am still light years away from a performance like that!

Yes, Farkas is right, the interlude starting at 14:00+ is great, giving it that extra touch to track, the variety-break. Great moment to do that there, builds up the tension even more, the listener wants more, sitting at the tip of the chair! :-)

That build up just before/around 25:00 is fantastic too, love it! Ha, ha, as well as the short break-stop you make just before 26:00, nice touch too :-)

Thank you very much for sharing this with us and kind regards, Garfield.

The ACL - Sinfonion has a CV controllable Chaotic Detune function (and another Chaotic Note Shuffle function, CV controllable).

Hello Plragde, hello All,

Plragde: Thank you very much again for your previous feedback. Regarding splitting the document into several parts, I have given that some thoughts and came up with the idea to keep the contents the same in the review report however I have removed the appendices from the review reports and created a separate document for the appendices for those who want to read the rest :-)

Your idea of adding a change log, I have adapted that as well, appendix C in that separate document that is available here for download:

https://garfieldmodular.net/index.php/other-documents/

All: The new style review reports will be, instead of just under 70 pages previously, nowadays just under 30 pages. Still a lot but at least less than half of what it had been before. For those who still don't like to read so much, just read chapter 2 that should do it.

The first new "style" review report, is the above-mentioned SEM filter report from Doepfer about the A-106-5.

Thank you very much, have a nice day and kind regards, Garfield.

Hi Farkas,

The Doepfer A-106-5 SE SEM filter review report is ready for download:

Hi Ryan,

Ha, ha, no worries and you don't need to trouble yourself to just please me, I am just providing feedback on how I see things, which doesn't mean that's necessarily correct.

Of course if you like to record a nice (long) dub track I wouldn't mind that at all! I don't mind indeed a bit longer tracks however 3 hours is even for my understanding a "bit" too much ;-)

Thank you very much for your kind words and kind regards, Garfield.

Hi Broken-Form,

That's great! :-) However... you leave us here at a high-level of excitement wanting to know...

What caused the issue? :-) Thank you very much in advance and kind regards, Garfield.

For review reports of Eurorack modules, please refer to https://garfieldmodular.net/ for PDF formatted downloads

Hi Nickgreenberg,

Oh that's great, then the most important element you have it already ;-)

Well... what you could consider then isn't really a pure sequencer (well... a chord sequencer) but might add some serious added value, which is the Sinfonion from ACL. If you think the Vector is a beast (which indeed it is if you just look at the point of being a sequencer) than the Sinfonion is a beast-cube (beast to the power of three) or something like that ;-)

That might be a real addition to it. Another interesting idea might be, as "simple" as it sounds, to add more drum variation, the Erica Synths - Drum Sequencer. Or yet another alternative the Erica Synths - Black Sequencer.

If you don't mind to think outside of the box (your Eurorack) then you might want to consider the Erica Synths' new drum synthesizer Perkons HD-01, brand new, not available yet :-)

Ha, ha, I have no idea why I come up with so many Erica Synths devices. Well there are tons of other good sequencers, you mentioned already yourself that list of sequencers made by Martin Doudoroff, it's rather a matter of money and HP space then lack of sequencers ;-)

Though please have a look at the Sinfonion, that really might be a good "add-on" for your already existing Vector. Good luck and kind regards, Garfield.

For review reports of Eurorack modules, please refer to https://garfieldmodular.net/ for PDF formatted downloads

Hi Nickgreenberg,

Sorry, I must have overlooked your post :-( Some feedback and input from my side.

I am very happy with the Vector (with expander module) from Five12, this is a serious sequencer to be considered. If you want to hear just an example of what kind of "crazy" things you can do with it, check my demo about this one out:

https://www.modulargrid.net/e/forum/posts/index/10041

Generally, if you are going to look seriously into a sequencer, and from the look of your posts, you are :-) Then take your sweet time and try to be honest and clearly as possible with yourself. What do I expect from a sequencer? What are my (minimum) requirements? To give you some food for thought (but not exclusive because for sequencers there is so much to check):

  • Number of voices?
  • Drum/percussion only? Synth leading voices? Both?
  • Number of steps, patterns, songs, presets, scenes, etcetera? Which of those are important to you? (confusing is that many manufacturers are using different terminology which doesn't make it easier for you to choose and to recognise when comparing them with each other)
  • Should it be able to do: ratcheting? glide? repeat? groove? velocity? mute? etcetera, again check what's important for you
  • Check if you are happy with the length (of the sequence) setting for the global sequencer or do you want that to be possible per voice/track?
  • Direction of the sequence, only forward? Or also backwards? Random? Ping-pong? There are a few very good sequencers but (some of them) they are very limited in their directions, some only forward :-( So please check for yourself what do you want the sequencer to be able to do?
  • Can you set the probability of each step (per track if possible)? Meaning that the sequencer puts a kind of chance to each note if it will be played or how many times or does it change the direction or does it do more or less ratcheting, etcetera
  • Are you okay with menu diving or rather not? I believe I read you don't want menu diving, so quite a few sequencers are not applicable for you then (by the way, for a sequencer I also don't want real menu diving, you want it to be playable and kind of logically to use and there should be no need for a manual laying next to it how to use it)
  • Do you want some modulation influence possibilities? Not all sequencers can do that

I most probably still forgot tons of parameters that one could/should check when trying to decide: "Which sequencer is the right one?" I felt it was a kind of nightmare to choose. My conclusion is: there is no real perfect sequencer... you have to make some compromises to come to that kind of "perfect sequencer that suites you best" :-)

It took me about one-and-a-half years and though I don't have the perfect sequencer, I am pretty happy with the Vector (together with the Jack Expander); it comes close to the perfect sequencer.

By the way, all the points for consideration I gave you here above, most of those can be handled/done by the Vector. Not many sequencers that can do all of that.

Good luck with the search for the sequencer and once you made your choice, I hope you will let us know, if possible with a demo of it :-) Kind regards, Garfield.
