The DOT is so far Fff.....lipping amazing under CV control, currently got it playing the 2hp Pluck & bell with a dirty Triangle wave sample stabbing in from the Disting, practically infinite percussion variation and still musical.

A Note to GarfieldModular and Defragmenteur.

I've gone for the Big Knobs and ordered a 103! I've already got a lot of small knobbed modules..... who knows though, if I enjoy the 103 enough, maybe a 104 later.
I've just started playing with the DNIPRO DOT and it looks like it's going to be the perfect companion.

I'm sure I have one of you to blame for big Knobs! ha

Like when I joined here and started my Eurorack Journey, everyone is going to tell you to have a Goal in mind before you start.
It will stop you spending a load of money on something you find you don't use or didn't need
Figure out what you want your Rack to do.... for me the initial goal was to fill in the gaps around the other gear I had so that the combo of other gear + Eurorack didn't have any crossover.
My goals have slewed a bit and I now want to bring in some of the capability of the external gear into the rack but not fully.

I don't think I followed the advice given here, but that's not to say that it wasn't helpful ;-)

Just had a chance to listen to and read through this post. Some amazing stuff you are doing which is a great inspiration for someone like myself who is just taking those first shakey steps into modular synthesis, so thank you for this!

Random question but is this the Wishbone Brewery where Oli, who used to work at Cap and Collar, works?
-- TMR1984

Yep :) Though he is currently Furloughed and its just me doing all the work we have at the moment.

Thank you for sharing. It's easier to understand the way you work with the instrument you build.
I have listened to your track several times with the patch in mind. Very interesting and beautiful piece!

A few questions:
- Are you fully satisfied with the 2hp TM, and why not have chosen the Music Thing Modular? (I personally use Marbles...)
- 2hp Euclid, same question :) Completely satisfied? Did you hesitate with another module like Euclidean Circles?

Thanks in advance for your answers.
With kind regards.
-- Sweelinck

Thanks :)

I'm happy with the 2hp TM, I didn't choose the Music Thing because I am trying to keep a compact setup (This has its pros and cons). I quite fancy a Marbles sometime.
2hp Euclid, same reasoning and the price is a lot cheaper than Euclidean Circles. I've got a DNI pro DOT on order and that has 3 channels of Euclidean sequences.

You could make the most of modulation sources with a DPW Design AV-1, your two inputs can be attenuverted, there is also a SUM output and a A>B output so lots of options for screwing around with your CV signals to create more. You can even throw a couple of gate sources at it and get a new sequence based on the two input.
That HN 3xMIA does look tempting though ;-)

MicroSequence runs the clock
Clock divided
2hp Euclid then opens and closes the envelope controlling the Freq and Res on a VCF
2hp Turing machine and Tune control all the Pitches
STO is split off to: 2hp Verb / Erica Pico DSP / Monsoon Clouds
There is also a little 2hp Bell in there which goes through the Stereo Tape Delay on the Disting MK4
Mostly mixed with the Befaco STMIX

Current Rack below (Ignore the DNI Pro DOT as its somewhere between Ukraine and UK on its way in the post)

Thanks again :)

The Sliders module is the Pittsburgh Modular MicroSequence, its mainly just used as my clock source, it has a cycle that has a probability of a 'rest' so I can start off with a slightly wonky clock. I've not really been using it as the Pitch/gate sequencer it is intended to be though i can see me using it differently as my system slowly lets me experiment with more styles. I do use the Pitch CV to modulate other modules.

I sent my Rackbrute 6U back and I'm currently waiting for a Refund from Bax-shop.co.uk it had overheating problems versus the simple Tiptop happy ending cases/power I already have. I won't buy anything from bax-shop again, even before Covid their email response was slow.
I need to find someone with a CNC router and I'll design and build my own, starting with the Tiptop uZeus power I have, then probably buy om Konstantlab Power at a later date.

I prefer the bigger knobs too, I have lots of 2hp modular gear and the little micro knobs are OK to a point.....!
There is a Robin Vincent Youtube vid about the 104, he loves it....

Hahaha, I modified the last patch and I'm still playing with it. STO as sound source instead. I've just ordered a couple of Z-Rails so I can add another row so its all going to come apart soon for a reorganise. I'm relatively confident I could recreate the patch even if the patch leads look a right mess which makes use of the Disting's Stereo Tape Delay.
I'm enjoying tapping off a couple of bands on the VCF too and patching to stereo then CV swings the Cut-off Frequency across the stereo field as it swings from BP to LP etc :)
Hopefully getting some money back from the Faulty Rackbrute case I returned so going to get a ADDAC 104 VC T-networks and a DNI Pro Dot drum sequencer for some light fluttery bleepy goodness to mingle with the ambient stuff.

I'm kinda thinking of options, Put the Roland Boutiques in front of me and I make something like Acid Techno.

I was considering the bottom row of my 'Wish list' that would give the option of more dance like stuff but also give me some bleepy bloopy fluttery bits to sit around a more ambient piece.

Again, thats way too complimentary!! Thanks :)

I enjoyed this patch.

All being well my next two modules will be a fairly standard oscillator and some more modulation, the Electrosmith 3340 VCO and the DivKid/Instruo ochd.
Then I need to start thinking about a bit more rack space and looking at some in-rack percussion.

Ok so this is my first VCF, the Happy Nerding HN VCF, this is just one sound source the Makenoise STO with all 3 outputs mixed before going through the WMD SSF ADSRVCA then onto the HNVCF. Multiple filter outputs tapped and routed to either Monsoon Clouds, Erica DSP or 2hp Verb. There is also a little 2hp Pluck at the start and finish going through clouds. Cheers for listening :)

Anything stereo all comes from 3 things which various signals go through, mono signals go into --> Erica Pico DSP, 2HP Verb and Monsoon Clouds ==> Stereo out. I don't have any way to pan anything at the moment.

"Trying out some Drone stuff, all 3 outputs on the Make Noise STO used into Mutable Veils which is also mixing in some 2hp Vowel and some fairly random samples played in via the Disting mk4, all that then goes into the Monsoon Clouds. Clouds is then Modulated via DPW Design AV-1 (Lovely bit of kit), then there is some subtle 2hp Pluck and Bell going on. Part of the modulation comes from the Noise Engineering Clep Diaz and part from the WMD / SSF ADSRVCA on looping mode kinda LFO-like. Pitch from the Pittsburgh Modular MicroSequence is messing with the samples in Disting."

I've had over-heating problems with my Rackbrute 6U, its getting sent back after a lengthy trouble shooting session with Arturia Support, it smelt like melting plastic, when i put the exact same module + more into my Tiptop Happy Ending Kit they all run cool. Real shame to be honest as it was about the prefect size / setup for the money and for my plans.
Bought it from Bax-shop in the UK, having real trouble getting them to send a return shipping label for it, they keep saying they have emailed it but nothing ever arrives.

Thanks Garfield, the deep tone is straight out of the sine wave output on the Make Noise STO with slow clocked Turing Machine taking gates from the Noise Engineering Bin Seq and straight to mixer on a mono channel. No midi keyboard or anything.

Yep I've got the 2hp Euclid at work too, it just needs a bit of gentle modulation to keep it evolving. I think the first thing I did when I racked up the Bin Seq was drive it from the Euclid, I guess something like the Befaco VC Slew would be nice for sliding between the pitches along with the Bin Seq.
I'm going to say that Mimetic Digitalis is a little out of my price range at the moment though i have been watching a few Ricky Tinez videos with it in.

Cheers :)

ModularGrid Rack
I've just had one of those moments where something feels to click into place with the direction you want to go in Eurorack, this is probably coupled with me reorganising my rack into a second TipTop Happy Ending kit, getting a Make Noise STO and the brilliant little Noise Engineering Bin Seq which is letting me have long gate lengths and slow note changes when clocking the Turing Machine (2hp TM) with the long tied notes from the Bin Seq.

Next steps are toward more modulation, probably an Ochd, so I can leave the Disting on Sample playing duty, though I do like the Clockable LFO on the Disting, the Noise Engineering Clep Diaz does do a nice job of clocked/stepped/LFO.

Its nice that I've managed to creep closer to my aims, thanks to reading the internet and watching Youtube :)

This is a subject that is just starting to confuse me too, so far I have bought quite a few of the great little 2hp modules and it does give quite a bit of constraint for fingers and patching. So I'm now thinking about Layout, all the small 2hp modules want to be scattered around so they are more accessible around lager hp modules.
I'm basically working across 3 rows, and I'm thinking i want to try and have the control bits like modulators, sequencers and Mixing on the bottom row then push the sound sources up and maybe the effects too.
I'm hoping things just become apparent where they should go as I buy more modules!!!
I'm half tempted to get another case and purpose it just for the output sections of mixer, effects etc etc

Good Luck!

Ah, no, I'm not coming our of the modular direct, into a Yamaha MG8 mixer first. I need to experiment more, the audio I manage to record into the iphone is too quiet if plugging direct, it only gets loud enough via the iRig 2 adapter but then its just Mono.

Thats waaay too kind, but thanks :) At the moment I'm finding getting Stereo audio into the iPhone in a loud enough state harder than it should be. I can get mono in via an iRig 2 adapter that is meant for a Guitar, but as far as i can tell it always comes out as Mono cos of the standard 1/4" Guitar jack socket. I never seem to get a loud-enough recording direct from my mixer without the iRig's pre-amp. I dare say I just need to learn more!

This one didn't turn out too bad...

"Yeah its a still photo again with a piece of audio behind it! Its all the things in the photo that are making the sounds, Eurorack Synth is all the plinky plonky stuff, then the Roland boutique SH01 is on the sort of noise-wash and the TB03 is firing off (both the boutiques are manually tweaked). Kinda Ambient generative from the Eurorack, as much modulation as my gear will allow, Noise Engineering Clep Diaz playing a blinder in LFO mode, going through 2hp Tune, 2hp Pluck and Bell, Disting on Stereo Tape Delay is a bit nice, Erica PICO DSP and 2hp Verb are the other effects, using the Mutable instruments Veils as a slightly modulated mixer with some slight effects feedback loops. Things brought in and out with the Befaco STmix. Pretty happy with this for a few mins of noodling, time to pull all the plugs ;-) Let me know what you think."

Next purchase is going to be a Monsoon Clouds, then just maybe a Instruo/DivKid Ochd, though almost definitely another source of modulation.

It may or may not be relevant to you but I can use my Pittsburgh MicroSequence to Trigger (when it hits a high note) and also control Pitch from the same CV Pitch output. With modules like the 2hp Pluck & Bell they have Polyphony in their release time so it can create some nice effects.

One sound source, just the 2hp Pluck, a fair amount of modulation from the Noise Engineering Clep Diaz and Clocked LFO from the Disting Mk4, the LFO is also controlling the sequence playing on the Pittsburgh Modular Micro Sequence, though the Pitches are taken from the Clep Diaz steps via the 2hp Turing machine and quantisized through the 2hp Tune. Audio split 3 ways to Intellijel Mixup, Dry / wet via Erica DSP and wet via 2hp Verb. I can listen to this for a really long time without getting bored!

Yeah, I could go via my own Yamaha Mixer.
And yeah the LH side would be having the FX Aid at the end of line but I guess it would be better before with a mult. The RH side is infinity more capable but a load of modules for a load of money.

The Patch out on the LH is self-contained.

Believe it or not there is method in my madness, My hope was that someone may show me their examples of their stages to output so I can learn a bit from others.
RH side would have the ability to split signals, route stereo, Pan mono, mute, effect and then double back on ts self for an feedback loop arund the effects.
LH side, relatively minimal patching ability but CV control, yet Mix and output with monitoring all in one module.

I could leave out the level meters so it doesn't look like a Christmas tree ;-)
