This is a subject that is just starting to confuse me too, so far I have bought quite a few of the great little 2hp modules and it does give quite a bit of constraint for fingers and patching. So I'm now thinking about Layout, all the small 2hp modules want to be scattered around so they are more accessible around lager hp modules.
I'm basically working across 3 rows, and I'm thinking i want to try and have the control bits like modulators, sequencers and Mixing on the bottom row then push the sound sources up and maybe the effects too.
I'm hoping things just become apparent where they should go as I buy more modules!!!
I'm half tempted to get another case and purpose it just for the output sections of mixer, effects etc etc
Good Luck!

Ah, no, I'm not coming our of the modular direct, into a Yamaha MG8 mixer first. I need to experiment more, the audio I manage to record into the iphone is too quiet if plugging direct, it only gets loud enough via the iRig 2 adapter but then its just Mono.

Thats waaay too kind, but thanks :) At the moment I'm finding getting Stereo audio into the iPhone in a loud enough state harder than it should be. I can get mono in via an iRig 2 adapter that is meant for a Guitar, but as far as i can tell it always comes out as Mono cos of the standard 1/4" Guitar jack socket. I never seem to get a loud-enough recording direct from my mixer without the iRig's pre-amp. I dare say I just need to learn more!

"Yeah its a still photo again with a piece of audio behind it! Its all the things in the photo that are making the sounds, Eurorack Synth is all the plinky plonky stuff, then the Roland boutique SH01 is on the sort of noise-wash and the TB03 is firing off (both the boutiques are manually tweaked). Kinda Ambient generative from the Eurorack, as much modulation as my gear will allow, Noise Engineering Clep Diaz playing a blinder in LFO mode, going through 2hp Tune, 2hp Pluck and Bell, Disting on Stereo Tape Delay is a bit nice, Erica PICO DSP and 2hp Verb are the other effects, using the Mutable instruments Veils as a slightly modulated mixer with some slight effects feedback loops. Things brought in and out with the Befaco STmix. Pretty happy with this for a few mins of noodling, time to pull all the plugs ;-) Let me know what you think."
Next purchase is going to be a Monsoon Clouds, then just maybe a Instruo/DivKid Ochd, though almost definitely another source of modulation.

It may or may not be relevant to you but I can use my Pittsburgh MicroSequence to Trigger (when it hits a high note) and also control Pitch from the same CV Pitch output. With modules like the 2hp Pluck & Bell they have Polyphony in their release time so it can create some nice effects.

One sound source, just the 2hp Pluck, a fair amount of modulation from the Noise Engineering Clep Diaz and Clocked LFO from the Disting Mk4, the LFO is also controlling the sequence playing on the Pittsburgh Modular Micro Sequence, though the Pitches are taken from the Clep Diaz steps via the 2hp Turing machine and quantisized through the 2hp Tune. Audio split 3 ways to Intellijel Mixup, Dry / wet via Erica DSP and wet via 2hp Verb. I can listen to this for a really long time without getting bored!

Yeah, I could go via my own Yamaha Mixer.
And yeah the LH side would be having the FX Aid at the end of line but I guess it would be better before with a mult. The RH side is infinity more capable but a load of modules for a load of money.

Believe it or not there is method in my madness, My hope was that someone may show me their examples of their stages to output so I can learn a bit from others.
RH side would have the ability to split signals, route stereo, Pan mono, mute, effect and then double back on ts self for an feedback loop arund the effects.
LH side, relatively minimal patching ability but CV control, yet Mix and output with monitoring all in one module.
I could leave out the level meters so it doesn't look like a Christmas tree ;-)

Left Hand Side or Right Hand Side??? The Left is probably a load cheaper!!
The ability to come out in stereo with some final effects and maybe have the ability to set up some effects loops (Feedback loops) to come back into the mix.

I've started out my modular journey with a fair amount of 2hp Modules, they really are very good but to sensibly use them when mounted in a rack you need to give them a minimum of 2-3hp blank space between them so you can tweak a knob that is right next to a patch lead jack... unless you have some type of Uber-Chopsticks-Skillz!
I'll still be buying more 2hp gear but I will focus on modules with a 3hp or larger size from now on so things are actually usable, I'm not sure how the recently announced Lunch Boxes from 2hp modular will be usable without a load of blank panels https://images.app.goo.gl/TytFVdND3qBGhqa28 But yeah, loads of love for the 2hp gear still.
btw.... that SD card slot in the Disting.... Have a paid of Tweezers on Standby!! ;-)

You simply enjoy it.
You like the experimentation.
You occasionally make something that sounds good.
You can cope that you can never get back to that ace patch you did a while back.
You sell other things in your life that you don't use to fund your modular.
You can cope with not buying everything at once.
....and you don't have to be good at something to enjoy it.

A quad VCA is on my wish list (either Veils or Blinds), I must say I like a few of the dual VCA though from Frequency Central or Eectrosmith, skinny enough to dot around a system close to what they will mainly be used on.
So with Maths, can you shoot it 4 separate triggers and get 4 separate envelopes?
Enjoy your spare HP, don't rush to fill every last space, this is not like filling sticker books. Resist the urge to 'complete' your rack, its never complete so just relax.
I can see two ways of thinking about this...
I currently have the WMD SSF ADSRVCA which I'm really liking, is this a good enough reason to buy more of them or is it better / more interesting with varied possibilities to buy things like the Befaco ADSR, Instruo Ceis, Intelegel Dual ADSR, Qu-bit Contour etc etc??? (Think exactly the same question for VCAs)
For the Befaco I'll probably do the DIY, Instruo looks pretty similar to the befaco then there is the Intellijel Dual ADSR which I really like the idea of as its based around the SH101, I used to own the Roland MC202.
I don't really have intentions to ever own a wall of Synth so maybe sticking with the WMD SSF ADSRVCA is the way to go, I'm also interested in something with a long cycle time.

Eventually when I've bought a few more modules I want to fire the 2hp bell off via a Befaco Burst as a one-shot of notes via a 2hp ARP, so hope for a flurry of notes that can be fired off with just one slowly clocked trigger.
I'm assuming A-2 on the Disting is like a Clock Multiplier?

The -Envelope from the ADSRVCA is modulating the speed of sample playback and there's 2hp action from Pluck and Bell along with some subtle Vowel, Erica Pico DSP and 2hp Verb on effects duty.

I've had a bit of a play with the sample modes, with my current rack setup there is some entertainment to be had with having a long sample set then triggering the ADSR to play snippets of the audio along with the other sequenced parts. I've got some old shortwave radio recordings, weather reports and the ubiquitous Moon-Landing samples, plenty of scope for fun. I need to dive into the sample playing abilities a bit deeper, the thing I note straight away is that the more samples you have loaded the harder it is to scroll through them with the limited range knob as its VERY fine adjustments.
I can get the SD card in with my fingers/finger nail but its never going to come out without tweezers :)

Hello Garfield.
I've been keeping dipping into it and the manual, I never knew I could fall out with a piece if gear so fast!
I think the VCO bits are the most usable for me at the moment, then there is the bit about using single-cycle .wav files for the Pulsar VCO and Wavetable VCO (SD card needed).
I guess you could say that, as a beginner at modular, the Manual could have an easy to understand explanation of each menu function, with 109 pages in the manual already a little more less-techie info wouldn't be missed.
Enjoy your spare HP, don't rush to fill every last space, this is not like filling sticker books. Resist the urge to 'complete' your rack, its never complete so just relax.
I've just got the Disting Mk4 and now i know why i was trying to avoid menu-based modules. I'm hoping there is going to be something in there that i can experiment with but right now I feel like the manual is like some weird form of algebra, and i could have spent my money on something i would have enjoyed straight out of the box rather than Click-Twist-click-twist-check the manual, plug-unplug-check the manual!
I shall persevere, but leave this expletive here Fckngmenus
Some time later
I have an SD card turning up soon for this so I can play with the sample playback stuff.
My current feelings are that I would get better use (Fun) out of a Ping-able LFO and a Radio Music :)

Got it! Thanks
4ms things are also on the Wish-list.
I've just been told over on FB that, as i kind of suspected, the Befaco Burst will do a 1-shot burst from a single pulse/ping/thing!

Cheers guys...
Someone over on the FB Eurorack group suggested the Qu-Bit Pulsar, this might be a thing as i think it will do a 1-shot burst of gates from a single pulse rather like hitting its Burst button.
The X7 idea is great though, for the moment the Pulsar is probably a little way off in my plan for buying modules. I'm mostly thinking smaller and cheaper at the moment.
So could a Divided by 16/32/64 Clock Pulse - Clock a Multiplier to trigger that flurry of Sequencer notes? Or would the Clock already be so slow in tempo that the Multiplier would be too slow?! I need a calculator to work this out!!
Enjoy your spare HP, don't rush to fill every last space, this is not like filling sticker books. Resist the urge to 'complete' your rack, its never complete so just relax.
A module that you send a clock trigger to once and it spits out a bunch of gates in a pre-determined sequence.
This is me assuming that most sequencer modules will advance 1-step for every clock trigger and not act like a 1-shot sample or triggering off a full sequence of say 16 steps.
Am a talking about a Burst Module?
Cheers for any pointers.

Thanks, the Temps Utile certainly ticks a few boxes. I have so far been staying away from menu-driven things, though I do realise I'm thinking of the Disting!!
I'm getting along fine with my Pittsburgh MicroSequence, with the direction on Random with possibility of a rest for gates and clock, then I'm using the pitch as modulation mostly.
*edit, Just grabbed a 2hp Div cheap on ebay so that might be my clock multiplying needs filled for the moment.

So far I'm pretty happy with where I've got to with the modules I've bought, my next purchase thoughts are around the following:
Expert Sleepers Disting Mk4
Noise Engineering Clep Diaz
2hp Arp
2hp RND
Happy Nerding FX Aid
Also need a Clock Multiplier
Or
Monsoon (NI Clouds Clone)
I need a bit more Random going into the Turing Machine, I feel I need a slow clock as the main clock with Multiplier for the lighter jingly/twinkly bits, a Clouds Clone and/or more effects for some textural washes of sound to go around what I already have (and derived from what I already have).

yep, each 'String' on a guitar (for instance) keeps resonating after being plucked, so one String can be played at a time but the decay of that string rings on into the others.
The 2hp Bell works in a similar way but has 6 voice polyphony, though each bell-strike can have quite a bit of a different resonance to the last, kinda de-tuned.
