New, open boxThe Catalinbread Fuzzrite Germanium is an analog fuzz pedal that faithfully recreates the highly sought-after, rare germanium version of the Mosrite Fuzzrite, a distinctive two-transistor American fuzz circuit from the mid-1960s. This is the fuzz sound most famously associated with tracks like Iron Butterfly's "In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida" and is characterized by a buzzy, aggressive, and sinewy tone.Unlike the more common silicon Fuzzrite, this Germanium model uses rare New Old Stock (NOS) PNP Germanium semiconductors, resulting in a smoother, warmer, and more dynamically responsive fuzz texture while maintaining the original circuit's characteristic gnarliness. Catalinbread includes a polarity inverter circuit so it can be safely used with standard 9V center-negative power supplies, overcoming the power limitations of vintage PNP circuits. The pedal features two main controls: Volume and Depth. The Depth knob is essentially a blend control, mixing in the second transistor gain stage with the first. When the Depth is set low, the sound is clearer and fatter; as it is increased, it transitions through voltage-starved, gated, and pseudo-ring mod effects, eventually reaching a mean, ripping, high-end saturated fuzz at maximum.A key modern addition that improves versatility over the original is the Vintage/Modern toggle switch. The Vintage mode replicates the original circuit's bright, old-school sound, which historically lacked low-end. The Modern mode significantly beefs up the low-end content and adds fullness, making the aggressive fuzz tone more suitable for contemporary rigs and use with bass guitar. This blend of classic circuit fidelity and modern utility makes it a unique and powerful entry in the fuzz pedal landscape.
