Elements is a full-featured synthesis voice based on modal synthesis - an underrated branch of physical modeling synthesis with a strange and abstract character.
Elements combines an exciter synthesis section that generates the raw, noisy sounds characteristic of bowing (filtered friction noise), blowing (pitch-controlled granular noise), or striking (sample playback of sticks, mallets, hammers, or brushes... or bursts of synthetic impulses).
These sources, or external audio signals, are processed by a modal filter bank - an ensemble of 64 tuned bandpass filters simulating the behavior of various resonant structures (plates, strings, tubes...) with adjustable brightness and damping. A stereo ambient reverb adds depth and presence to the sound.
All parameters have a highly intentional and well-defined influence on the sound. Great care was taken during the development of Elements in selecting parameter ranges and response curves to produce a wide palette of sounds — often beyond physical realism — but always well controlled and stable. The 'dark places' of noise and feedback are approached gradually and remain responsive to the controls throughout. The module is deliberately free of menus and switches — what you select and set is what you hear.
