The AP-1 mk2 is a three-part module consisting of a microphone/instrument preamplifier, envelope follower & opto compressor. A low-noise preamp boosts either mic or instrument signals to feed the opto compressor, with an XLR input offering 48V phantom power and up to 71 dB of gain for anything from ribbons to hot condensers, plus a quarter-inch input suited to high-impedance sources like guitars and piezos. An envelope follower converts the signal’s amplitude into a control voltage with adjustable attack, release, and switchable high or low-pass filtering. The opto compressor uses that control voltage to drive smooth, soft-knee compression through to limiting at higher levels, finished with 15 dB of make-up gain. Its side-chain is linked to the envelope follower’s filter to keep compression behaviour consistent even when the input is EQ-shaped.
