Description

A completely new style of digital voice for Eurorack! This ambitious sound source utilises a novel technique called 'scanned synthesis' which remained in the realm experimental computer music until Qu-bit brought it into the hardware world. According to its creators, Scanned dynamically creates wavetables by modelling physical objects on different points on an agitated string - think bracelet beads spaced along a jumprope. If that sounds perplexing, that's because this voice is fucking weird! All of the parameters affect the others in interesting ways, and even familiar synthesis elements behave unexpectedly. A big part of the fun for me was reliving the "I have no idea what I'm doing but it's beautiful" feeling I had blindly turning knobs on my first Microkorg.Scanned's digital architecture also confers QOL advantages. The main coarse tuning pot is helpfully quantised to semitones, while the fine knob offsets the pitch by cents in either direction. The use of a physical model means Scanned can run freely as a complex oscillator or gated with its own natural decay. It will also act as a helluva waveshaper for whatever you put through the Inject input in lieu of the internal hammer wave. These parameters are set with esoteric controls like Strength, Mass, and Center rather than familiar ADSRs and lowpass cutoff, but a learning curve means all the more payoff when you gain control over the wonderful chaos that is Scanned. This module was explored lovingly in a smoke-free home. It has been extensively tested before packaging.- unique digital oscillator based on procedurally generated wavetables excited like physical objects- excite (gate) input with manual trigger button and self-oscillating parameters allow for use as a standalone voice or droning VCO without additional envelopes or VCAs- 'Inject' input replaces internal 'hammer' oscillator to transform both the module and external signals- mono audio output; CV inputs without attenuation for all knobs- delightful and informative LEDs respond to knob and CV valuesSome favourite patches include:- simply 'analoguify' the module by Injecting a real VCO tracking the same v/oct instead of the internal hammer; send both to a mixer for easy wet/dry mix with a strong fundamental- velocity to Strength and Dampen inputs creates more natural, instrument-like response; aftertouch for more synthy expression- fun and freaky feedback shenanigans from multing the output back into the Inject input
