LFO Cluster Generator
DIY complete kit.
In 1984 Ken Stone decided he needed a circuit that would simulate the flickering of fluorescent lights for his model train set. He came up with a pseudo-random LFO based on the 40106 Hex Schmitt Trigger Inverter, using oscillators based on its single stages, These are then mixed together using an LM358 or similar. The result is a series of random fluctuations that are perfect for modulation purposes. The design can be easily changed to provide different frequencies or the mix thereof (we will mention these mods in the build document where applicable)
The resulting module was the Psycho LFO, which had three different fixed frequencies and one adjustable one. The Super-Psycho LFO was the more elaborate version which added Range and Off switches per oscillator, and square-to- triangle wave shaping for two of the oscillators. The Range switch allows it to operate in the audio realm, providing a sort of 'aleatoric' random sequence of tones. The Glide circuit allows for smoother transitions (portamento) In the Orbital Drift this can be achieved by lowering the value of the 2.2 uF electrolytic capacitors. The Orbital Drift adds two more Rate pots, making it a ‘Medium-Psycho LFO’
Controls:
Rate 1,2,3; Depth, Glide, Glide on/off.
Power consumption: -6v peak
10 HP. About 2.5 centimeter in depth.
