16-Bit Shift Register with quantization, scale saving/loading, sequence sculpting, and machine-state recall

v1.27 New Firmware Features Walkthrough: (07/06/2026)
The Shroud of Turing is an Arduino-based (multiple free firmwares), generative, performance-focused, shift register sequencer inspired by the Turing Machine, reimagined with with additional tools to help you evolve your generated phrases. At its heart is a 16-bit shift register that generates evolving pseudo-random CV sequences — turn the probability knob to sweep between locked, repeating patterns and ever-changing generative melodies, or find the sweet spot in between where sequences gradually mutate over time.
What sets the Shroud of Turing apart is its built-in keyboard, and musical quantizer. Use the onboard keyboard to define custom scales, and the sequencer's output snaps to musically meaningful notes — no external quantizer needed. Build scales from any combination of notes, save up to six scales to memory, and recall them instantly during a performance. Leave quantization off for raw, unquantized voltage, or engage it to bring harmonic structure to generative sequences.
Once you've found a pattern you love, the recently updated firmware (v1.2.7) gives you more ways than ever to lock it in and perform with it. Add portamento by holding Shift and dialing the pot — anywhere from instant note-to-note jumps to long, sweeping glides. Nudge the sequence forward or backward with pattern rotation until it lands on the downbeat you want. Shift your entire voltage output window up or down in one-volt steps — hold Shift and tap the octave buttons to walk the same pattern through different registers without touching your scale or range size. Use loop reset to snap to step one on command, or sculpt patterns by hand with the clear and set bit functions.
And when you find a setup that's truly working for you — the right pattern, the right scale, the right range, the right glide — save the whole thing to one of five machine-state slots. Everything gets captured: your 16-bit pattern, loop length, rotation, voltage range, active scale, and portamento setting. Recall it instantly, even after a power cycle. With five independent slots, you can keep a completely different configuration for every song, key, or mood.
Whether you're looking for a source of happy accidents, a tool for controlled generative composition, or a compact sequencer that speaks in scales, the Shroud of Turing bridges the gap between chaos and musicality.
This module is a part of the Nocturne Alchemy Platform - a flexible eurorack module series that shares the same robust Arduino-based hardware, allowing one to effortlessly swap firmware and functionalities through an intuitive web loader. By purchasing one module, you gain access to a full range of freely available firmwares, including the other current creations, Slight of Hand and Arp Of Darkness, and Seventh Summoner, as well as more planned for future release! It's like getting multiple modules for the price of just one!
