The AMPS3 module uses a 3W Class-D audio amplifier chip, delivering high-quality playback with low noise levels. The noise depends on the output power. The input voltage and should therefore be > 100mV ptp.
The Class D power amplifier drives the loudspeakers without a low-pass output filter. Due to this filterless design, however, the output signal is only suitable for driving further power amplifiers if a 250kHz low-pass filter is switched into the signal path. (Plugging 32Ω stereo headphones into the stereo out socket and connecting to the power amp via the output sockets from channels 1+2 to the power amp also serves this purpose). The actual AMPS3 Module uses 2Ω Resistore in all outputs inorder to prevent accidental shortages when plug/unplug the headphone jacks. The AMPS3 power is not throttled and delivers the output signals to GND, so that they can be reused in the system. Input voltages of up to 10V AC can be attenuated with the gain controls in order to obtain full modulation. Larger input voltages lead to clipping at the output, which in the long run damages the lifetime of the output transistors.
