The PRE is a Low Noise Pre-Amp for any external audio signals:

very low noise
sensitivity potentiometer for adjusting to various signal sources, e.g. microphone or e-guitar
soft clipping behaviour, with red indicator LED
trimmer on the rear for adjusting output level (up to approximately 20Vpp)
jumper on the back side activates optional +12V voltage source for powering electret microphones
