LO-FI ISD Sampler

LOFI Tape Sampler V5 - After years of experimenting with the ISD1820 sampler chip it still surprises me. I have updated the module to include the following.....

Intergrated Microphone - Panel mounted condenser microphone

Microphone switch - Record from the microphone or the audio in or mix both!

EOC Output - End Of Cyle gate / trigger output. This output become a clock when the module is ing loop mode.

MIX Crossfader - Mixing between the input signal and the sampler/filter output.

Normalized CV - Audio in is normalized to CV IN for FM over recording and playback pitch.

CV LOCK switch - Mute CV IN jack during REC mode.

Momentary loop - Holding trig now loops playback.

Gateable looping - Sending a gate to the TRIG input will put the module into loop mode. If the input is still high when playback has reached end of cycle it will retrigger and play again... and again.

Reactive TRIG input - DRY/WET MIX reacts to the TRIG input level.

The core of the LO-FI tape sampler was inspired by Peter Edwards of Casper Electronicsand his experimentation with the ISD1820 sampler chip. The name “tape” is given to the module due to the Lo-fi sample rate which is similar to the classic Casio SK1 sampler keyboard.

The module can sample and save one lofi audio file of up to 20s at standard playback rate. The sample can then be played back by either in its entirety or gated.

There is a loop switch which triggers the sample to play again after the sample has stopped. The attenuveter CV input controls the pitch of the sample allowing you to speed up, slow down and audio rate modulate your sample.

A unique feature of the module is the ability to save the CV modulation to a recording to get tape like wobbles!

This can be used to create kick like pitch bends when using an envelope for CV and to trigger a recorded sound at the sametime.

This module can also be used a a LOFI lo-pass filter with 3 modulation it inputs!

Switch to FT and then feed a audiorate signal into the CV, gate and/or trig for werid ringmod style effects.

Original features;

High/low pitch range switch
Attenuveter CV
Increased output gain to 5v peak to peak using a active opamp circuit.
Expander headers
Reduced end of sample “click”
Lovingly hand soldered and built at Beepboop Electronics Workshop.
Includes power ribbon, mounting screws and 1 year Warranty

New features

Intergrated Microphone - Record your voice or the ambient sound in the room straight to the module. Speaking at a normal level should give good results but to saturate the sample more get closer to the panel. The panel microphone is activated by depressing the microphone button labbeled MIC. The microphone signal can be mixed with the audio input jack signal which results in a much noiser LOFI recording.

MIX Crossfader - The new MIX crossfader allows you hear a mix of the dry audio input signal and the wet sampler replay/filter output. Note. The Microphone signal is only audiable directly from the MIX when in FT (Filter Thru) mode.

Normalized CV - To allow for more timbre variation the audio input is now also normalised to the CV input. To remove the modulation move the CV attenuverter to the centre position or insert a cable into the CV IN jack. When recording it is recommend to only use moderate levels of modulation to ensure reliable recording. Otherwise switch on CV LOCK.

CV LOCK switch - When in the upper position the CV IN will be muted. The advantage is that the recording mode becomes more stable and the recorded sample is unmodulated but as soon as it is played back the CV IN is applied again!

Gatebale loop - Gate the looping of the playback by either holding down the trig button or applying a 5V gate! Alternatively kill the looping by holding gate, this pauses the looping until gate switch is no longer depressed. If you press REC while looping the module will switch to REC mode. Once you stop recording the module will keep looping as long at trig is depressed. Sending a signal to the TRIG input jack while holding loop will stop the looping.

Reactive TRIG input - The trigger input is normalized to a vactrol which increases the MIX output towards the sampler playback/filter side. The effect is you can side chain your input signal against! The other novel feature is that you can also apply amplitude modulation while the sample plays back as the trigger input is ignored by the sampler until it has finished it playback when activated using the trig input.

Try using diffrent shape signals to "trigger" the playback, Using a triangle wave has the effect adding attack to the playback amplitude, for anyone looking to minimse the start click this is a very useful trick.
