The Swiss Chainsaw
Basilisk is built around the idea that high-gain distortion should feel massive without collapsing into mud. Instead of chasing smooth saturation or polite overdrive, the circuit was designed to deliver towering, aggressive tone that remains sculptable and controlled. The goal was simple: create a distortion capable of carrying the full weight of doom, sludge, and stoner riffs while still giving the player the tools to carve the sound precisely.
The character of the pedal is dense, roaring, and unapologetically heavy. Thick lows surge forward with the force of a collapsing wall while the upper mids cut through with a sharp, chainsaw-like edge. Chords expand into huge, grinding structures and single notes sustain with a biting presence that refuses to disappear in a mix. Even at extreme gain levels, the sound stays focused and articulate, giving riffs weight without turning them into indistinct noise. This is where the nickname comes from: the Swiss Chainsaw.
At the core of Basilisk is a stacked MOSFET gain architecture designed to build saturation progressively. The signal first passes through a pre-gain shaping stage that tightens the low end and clears space before distortion begins. From there, cascading MOSFET stages introduce dense harmonic layers, adding sustain and aggression while preserving attack. A fully active three-band EQ sits at the center of the circuit, allowing the sound to be sculpted from subterranean rumble to cutting, mid-forward grind. After this shaping stage, a high-threshold hard-clipping section adds the raw, brutal edge that defines the pedal’s character.
Because the EQ interacts strongly with the gain structure, the Basilisk can move through a wide range of heavy voices. The low control can push the sound into earthquake-level rumble or tighten the bottom for faster, more controlled riffing. The mid control shifts between scooped doom textures and snarling midrange punch, while the high band determines whether the distortion feels dark and brooding or sharp and slicing. These controls make the pedal adaptable to different guitars, amps, and tuning styles without losing its core identity.
Basilisk thrives in rigs built for weight and impact. It was created for players working in drop tunings, slow tempos, and riff-driven music where the guitar must carry enormous sonic mass. Doom, sludge, and stoner players will immediately feel at home, especially those searching for distortion that remains tight and articulate even under huge amounts of gain. The circuit also keeps the low end intact, making it equally effective for bass or extended-range guitars when massive foundation is required.
Designed and manufactured in Switzerland by RhPf Electronics, Basilisk captures the spirit of the mythical creature that inspired its name: something ancient, powerful, and dangerous when awakened. Step on the switch, and the beast rises.
