Description

Straight out of the time capsule up here on the mountain, this Russian Big Muff is in mint condition. It never left my studio. It has been safely stored in the included original wooden box for 35 years. I am the original owner. This is the Bubble Font version, which has rounder, chunkier letters with softer edges — they look “puffier” compared to the Tall Font versions. This style came a bit later in the Green Russian run and many collectors seek it for both look and tone. Miraculously, also included is the original plastic battery cover, which is taped along the bottom edge, acting like a hinge to prevent loss. History has shown that these covers fall off instantly, strangely enough in drinking establishments, and are lost forever. Not this one. Never been in a bar. It has led a sheltered life. You will need a 9 volt battery. There is no other power connection. NOTE: This pedal is all original, as I received it, brand new. No repairs, damage or modifications. I will tell you that the control knobs held on to the pot shafts by small set screws were not installed ideally at the factory so that the dot indicators align to the same positions at full clockwise and counterclockwise pot positions. This can be corrected, but I do not want to try to remove the 30 year old knobs to align them. Also, the volume knob was not fully seated on the pot shaft and sits a bit higher than the other knobs, and is at a slight angle from parallel to the pedal surface. The shaft is exactly perpendicular and spins true. Purely cosmetic and only noticeable under close inspection. All pots function well and impart an impressive amount of tonal variation. Sounds great at every setting. DESCRIPTIONThe Sovtek Big Muff Pi is a version of the legendary Big Muff Pi fuzz/distortion pedal originally designed by Electro-Harmonix (EHX). During the 1990s (and through the 2000s), EHX partnered with its Russian sister company Sovtek to manufacture Big Muffs in Russia — and these versions developed their own distinct voice and cult following. The Sovtek Big Muff Pi has a rich history and signature voice — different from other Big Muff versions thanks to its unique mid-low emphasis and smoother gain character. Whether you’re chasing vintage grunge tone, massive fuzzy leads, or beefy bass fuzz, the Sovtek lineage has something distinctive to offer.MUFF History• The original Big Muff Pi was created in 1969 by Mike Matthews of Electro-Harmonix and quickly became famous for its rich, fuzzy distortion with massive sustain. (NOTE: A lucky player in Oregon just purchased my original 1969 perforated circuit board version. Does anyone out there hear sweet fuzz tones off in the distance?)• After EHX faced financial troubles in the early ‘80s, Sovtek revived production in Russia, making Big Muffs throughout the 1990s. These “Russian” Muffs — including Green Russian, Black Russian, and Civil War variants — gained popularity for their unique tonal character and affordability. What Makes Sovtek Big Muffs Special?Tonal Characteristics• Thicker low end and more mid presence than many U.S. Big Muffs — this gives a fatter, more aggressive fuzz voice that sits well in mixes.• Often described as less scooped and smoother than vintage American Big Muffs, while still offering plenty of sustain and distortion.• Because of the robust mid-low emphasis and smooth grit, they’re also popular with bassists. Why Players Love It• Creamy fuzz and sustain — great for rock, grunge, stoner, and fuzz-heavy styles.• Heavy, muscular low end — cuts through without getting lost in the mix.• Distinct voice from other Big Muffs — warmer, punchier, and often described as “fatter.” • Usable for both guitar and bass, giving flexibility on the pedalboard. General Tone Differences Across Big Muff VersionsBelow is a breakdown of how the Sovtek Big Muff compares to other well-known Big Muff circuits — from vintage to reissues:Sovtek / Russian Big Muff (’90s & Reissues)Sound Character:• Fatter low end and robust bass — often thicker than most American Big Muffs.• Mids slightly more present than vintage USA circuits, helping it cut through a band mix. • Less gain and gritty distortion compared with some earlier US versions.• Generally smoother and heavier than classic American Big Muffs, with a denser, woolly fuzz.Variants:• Civil War / Tall Font Green Russian – smoother, darker, big bottom end with clear mids. • Bubble Font Green Russian – bit more grit, slightly more sustain. • Black Russian – similar tone to Green Russian, maybe slightly less bottom end/clarity depending on box size. Use Case: Great for doom, stoner, grunge, and big rhythm fuzz where a thicker, more saturated fuzz is ideal. Many players pair them with low-tuned guitars or bass because of the pronounced low end. Vintage USA Big Muffs (Triangle, Ram’s Head, Pi)These are earlier American circuits (1970s era) that defined the classic Big Muff fuzz.Triangle Big Muff• More open and “vintage” sounding fuzz with less gain and scooped mids.• Smooth and violin-like sustain — good for classic rock and lead lines. Ram’s Head Big Muff• Slightly more focused with more mids than Triangle.• Tighter, more articulate sound for solos and chord clarity. Compared to Sovtek:• Vintage USA models tend toward more scooped mids and more treble detail.• They usually have less booming low end and more gain choppiness/character.• Sovtek often feels darker and thicker in the low-mid range than these classic USA versions.Modern Reissues (NYC, Nano/Little, Op-Amp, Deluxe Big Muff)NYC / Little Big Muff• Inspired by later USA circuits; often brighter and more aggressive than Russian ones. Electro-HarmOp-Amp Big Muff• Uses op-amps instead of discrete transistors → different gain character (often raspier and less classic “tube-like”).Sovtek Deluxe Big Muff• A modern expanded version of the Green Russian with parametric mids, blend, noise gate, and wicker switch — very versatile. • You can tailor the tone anywhere from classic thick Russian fuzz to something that cuts like a more mid-focused Muff.Quick Tone Summary (Compare Styles)Version -------------- Bass-------- Mids--------Treble----Gain/Clarity---------CharacterSovtek / Russian ★★★★★ ★★★★☆ ★★★☆☆ Moderate. What a board that would be. Who deserves it more than you? If you are a bass player, the bottom end from this pedal is off the hook. If you play guitar, you will never have to worry about losing too much bottom end again when you step on this tone monster.I hope you enjoy it. I hate to give it up, but for me, it's time to thin the herd. MORE NOTES:1.
