Here is an amazing sounding and versatile RAT that was brand new in the box before I removed it for my mods. This is a more recent reissue from the last few years and I have upgraded it in a number of tasty ways. First, I replaced the modern IC chip with an NOS 1977 Signetics LM308 chip - closely emulates what was used in some of the earliest V1 "Fringe Tail" versions of this iconic pedal. The schematics for these older chips are completely different from the more modern equivalents (usually, a lot fewer parts) which results in a warmer, less aggressive feel, though there is still plenty of distortion in there. I then did my tone mods for that warmer '79 sound, upgraded the caps so this can handle 18v power if so desired (for more clean headroom), and I did my version of the Reutz mod that both tames the gain and greatly improves the tonal response. There is a little trimmer you can see that is accessible through the battery door to adjust the tone response to taste (I have it where I like it). The little toggle on the right, when switched to the left, provides a warmer, more variable gain response, and can dial in some delicious overdrive with the Distortion control dialed back. Flip the toggle to the right and get a gain boost for more output, more distortion (pushes more signal through the diodes) and a sharper response at high distortion settings. I also replaced the crap stock diodes with NOS Philips 1N914 diodes, to more closely match those in the originals, then did a bit more. The little toggle on the left is a diode/clipping switch. Switch to the right is stock (using those 1N914 diodes), switch to the left pulls in a pair of red LED's for increased output and a more aggressive edge to the drive/distortion. With the switch in the middle, the diodes are lifted out of the circuit for a louder, fuller sound, and even more clean headroom - great for pushing your tube amp into overdrive heaven (with the distortion control dialed back). It is an amazing rodent with that extra power coursing through. This is a very versatile RAT machine with lots of options and some amazing tone. An attractive little RAT for sure.
