Description

Though the FZ-1S shares the call letters of its earlier sibling, the FZ-1A, they are not the same. The FZ-1S is a fuzz octave pedal, using two transistors as the diodes to create the up-octave effect. Like other similar pedals of the era, the octave was meant to act as a treble boost. Great fuzz sounds from full to fizzy, and the octave creates some very unique effects. Pretty rare, and often very expensive, this one is in excellent condition and works perfectly. Some online claim the FZ-1S was designed by Oberheim, but you can see it was made by All Test Devices in New York. That means it was designed by Richard Mintz, who created a number of the unique effects for Maestro in the late 60's and early 70's. Check the last couple of pics and you will see that I have done some restoration work on this (thus the lower price). This looks to have been traumatized a long time ago, possibly resulting in it not getting a lot of use. The circuit boards in these were mounted to the back of the heavy steel enclosure, and something happened that caused the board to break off the screw offset mounts. See the last two pics for the original trauma and my fix. In the pic showing the breaks, the break on the left corner had a solder point on it with the output cap and wire to the volume control, but no broken traces. The broken corner on the right broke off a piece of the ground trace. As a result, this guy did not work. My fix involves using cloth electrical tape soaked in super glue. Ugly for sure, but solid. You can also see in the last pic how I reinforced the ground trace. That will not break again. Then I padded the back of the board when I reconnected the mounts. Very solid and will hold together in the shop or on the road.
