The Wampler cataPulp British Distortion is a classic ‘amp-in-a-box’ pedal. It is based on a fruity favourite, as the graphics and the name itself might indicate. Hook it up and you can squeeze out a vast range of juicy tones, from a clean boost to edge of amp breakup, through to pure, unadulterated (but very usable) filth. With a simple 3-knob EQ section for BASS, MID and TREBLE, and a VOLUME and GAIN control, the interface is reassuringly simple, and the results are equally appealing. Soft relay switching and top-mounted jacks make this a great addition to any pedalboard. The pedal for sale is as pictured, a ‘Version 1’ in mint condition, and it works perfectly. I bought this just after its release in 2015, and it had a decent, Velcro-free run on the main board – one that never leaves the home studio. After that it was retired to its box, and it has lived in its furry pouch until recent testing, kept company by its Wampler box candy. The Wampler cataPulp has been out of production for a few years now, and they’re rarely found in the wild, certainly not as clean as this. Jump on it if you're keen because it won’t be here for long!
