Description

This is a 90s-ish Reissue of the MXR 117, known as the M117R, but before they went to the sparkly double-battery door version that is more common. I believe this early reissue used some Matsushita/Panasonic 3204 Bucket Brigade Chips - different from the incredible Reticon SAD1024 used in the vintage AC Powered units. This model does not offer battery-power option. More modern versions of the M117R tend to use Cool Audio chips, which I think most agree are not inferior but are a different beast entirely. From my experience, the quality of the circuit and tailoring around a given chip has more impact than the chip itself.. but to each their own on this topic. To be clear, this is not the MX117, the vintage unit made famous by Van Halen or by Siouxsie and the Banshees - but it actually sounds closer to that model to me than the most current versions. They all sound great, period, if you love the depth and slowness at which this flanger can crawl, it's just a very addictive and fun to use device. I landed on this 90s reissue because of the ergonomics of the side-jacks and understated look, and 'cool factor' of having a harder to find unit - but I also love the PastFx Hot-for-Flanger - which sounds rather different but does the same tasks very well. I have an MX117 to compare things too, and while it may sound the best out of all of them, there are some nice modernities and less aged components to deal with in the later versions of the mxr flanger. This thing works great and I've included a highly available One-Spot adapter to change 9v to 18v. This must be run at center-negative 9 volts in order for the adapter to translate for the pedal, running at center negative 18v. I believe you'll get audible sound and effect from 9v, but I don't recommend it. Of course... much worse - don't ever exceed voltage. If you have an 18v adapter ready for this, that will work great. Any questions / concerns, let me know. It's hard to find a video of the 90s reissue, so I did find one that is short and not-great.. but I wanted to be as forthright as possible about the pedal. I recommend you see other videos of the sparkly reissue to get essentially the same experience. I was hoping to make more use of this pedal but I just found myself playing quite a lot in a more country-themed band and while it can work, the flanger is not a traditional country sound by any means. I have other pedals that do the tricks, so I'm letting this gem go - it's a harder to find specimen and I hope finds a loving home that will play with it all the time. Enjoy! Any shipping preferences - please let me know and I shall accommodate to the best of my ability.
