Modern take on the classic Germanium Tone Bender MK2 circuit
Taras Bulba is our take on the classic Germanium Tone Bender MK2 circuit. In addition to vintage fuzz, we put a bunch of modern features into this pedal: a switchable pickups simulator with a buffer that allows you to use the pedal with modern guitar pickups and place the effect everywhere in your pedalboard, external bias control, and hi-cut tone control. In that batch, I've used NOS Germanium transistors: MP20 (German, the 80s), P416B (Soviet, 70s).
Controls:
- Attack - gain control.
- Bias - varies 1st stage transistor biasing, modest clean-up gain.
- Hi-Cut - tone shaping that reduces high frequencies.
- Volume - effect output level.
- Mode toggle - switches between MK2 and MK1.5 circuits. Both have a very different characters; MK1.5 is more close to Fuzz Face.
- PU Sim toggle - adds/removes buffer with pickup simulator from the circuit; when switched off, you're getting classic effect sensitive to what is placed before the pedal.
- Impedance - works only with pickup sim enabled, controls the amount of the signal coming to the effect. Somehow similar to guitar volume control.
- PU Type toggle - works only with pickup sim enabled, switches between softer (more single-coils alike) and slightly heavier pickup types.
Power Supply: 9V DC adapter (Boss-style negative center) not included. No batteries. They are bad for the environment 🌲.
